Dallas Morning News writers -- in the past month -- have commented on whether Jeff Fisher , who will part ways as head coach of the Tennessee Titans, would have been a good choice as Dallas Cowboys head coach.

A sampling of their thoughts:

Rick Gosselin: Maybe Jason Garrett will be a great one over time, but he's still learning how to be a head coach and to deal with the pressures and decisions the job entails. He's made some mistakes in 2010 and he'll make more in 2011. Jeff Fisher has been there and done all that. He's one of the 20 winningest coaches in NFL history. He's been to a Super Bowl and came within a yard of possibly winning it. You're question specifically asked "the better coach in 2011." That would be Fisher hands down.

Jean-Jacques Taylor: Here's the deal: If Jerry can't get Bill Cowher or Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh to take the job - he's done the franchise a disservice if he hasn't phoned each of them - then the owner should give Garrett the job. Count me among those not interested in seeing yet another NFL retread, whether it's Jon Gruden or Jeff Fisher or one of the thousands of dudes who fit into that category.

Tim Cowlishaw: The tide of support that developed for Fisher as the Titans grew more undisciplined by the week this season never failed to amaze me. Fisher's a well-spoken guy. Has kind of a neat beard at times. Took a team to the Super Bowl once. Last century (1999 season).

He last won a playoff game after the '03 season. The last seven years - that's practically a lifetime in today's NFL - the Titans were 0-2 in the playoffs, below .500 in the regular season and a frequent violator of just about every NFL conduct policy. They also were one of four teams penalized more than 1,000 yards in 2010.

Fisher's resume - at this point - suggests a guy who can give you just about everything you don't want if you're trying to turn around the Cowboys.

Hell no. I don't care about Garrett vs Fisher, you cannot afford to wait until the end of January for the right coach to lose his old job.

And Cowher would not be a retread?

That Bud Adams is a dirty but smart mofo. He waited until all the coaching vacancies were filled before releasing Fisher. I believe that he did not want to take a chance with the Texans going after him. Had Fisher bee released at season's end, the Texans would have parted ways with Kubiak---they almost did, and Fisher would currently be the HC of the Texans or Dolphins.
