Should Cowboys add veteran WR?

SAN ANTONIO -- With Roy Williams gone, the Cowboys appear to be short in their wide receiver depth after Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

Kevin Ogletree will get a chance to be the No. 3 wide receiver. Sam Hurd could be an option to return. They took Dwayne Harris late in the draft and they have Jesse Holley, Manny Johnson, Troy Bergeron, Teddy Williams and some other guys in camp.

Should the Cowboys go out and get a No. 3 wide receiver?

The biggest question is Bryant’s health. He missed most of his rookie training camp and all of the preseason with an ankle injury. He broke his ankle at Indianapolis with four games to go. He always seemed to have some nagging injury.

To me, that would be the only reason to get a No. 3 wide out; insurance for Bryant.

But if you’re wanting the Cowboys to get a No. 3 wide out because you’re not sure about Ogletree, Hurd and so many others, then I think you’re off base.

With Austin, Bryant, Jason Witten and Felix Jones you’re looking at roughly 285-300 receptions among them. A No. 3 wide receiver would get about 30 catches, maybe. Economically speaking, to me, it would not make much sense to go grab a veteran, like a Lance Moore, Steve Breaston, Derrick Mason, for that type of production.

And, yes, I say all this realizing it is a big gamble to rely on Bryant.

It definitely wouldn't be priorty #1. I would like to see how Ogletree responds to moving a notch up the ladder in camp and also what Harris has to offer before waving uneccassry dollars in an overpriced FA veterans face.

Simple. Sign a mid level vet to a cap friendly deal, if one is available, for insurance. Give Ogletree every shot to take the job, if he does, great. If he doesn't, then you have your insurance.

I understand you can't have 3 #1's, but there's no need to take a chance.

I don't trust Ogletree yet. I know Sam Hurd is garbage.

I keep forgetting about Harris. Still, I like having a 3wr set that you know can get the job done. We know Ogletree can run a bubble screen. That's about all I've seen him do.

I like Harris too, but how productive will he be missing out on OTA's and Mini camps?

I think the Cowboys will bring in another wr. They should too right after they get some guards, De and safeties. No hurry

Don't sign a receiver.

I didn't post this during my twitter-whoring yesterday, but Bennett had a twitter post that said he had met with Garrett, and he was excited about this year.

That clearly suggests to me that Bennett is going to be more involved in the offense. Bennett has been a bit of a nut job, but I think he's the kind of talent that will never be motivated until he's involved.

Physically, he's a match up nightmare.

Start involving him in the game plan, and I think he's going to be a major factor for us this year. I'd dare say 30 receptions for 400-500 yards and 3-6 touchdowns.

I hope so, because I'm getting sick of waiting for Martellus to improve. Git r done already.

How much do you expect anybody to "improve" when they are so far down the progression chart? The pass progression goes through 1.) Witten, 2.) Miles, 3.) Dez---before he got hurt, 4.) Roy--when he was here, and then either Bennett or an RB.

Bennett has had enough time to prove himself. I'm still hoping he can get back to form. If not Phillips is waiting in the wings.

If we did go vet I was thinking more of the lines of Mark Clayton.

We'll probably stick with what we have. Do more two TE sets.

That's what I think.
true and with John Phillips coming back That gives us another target out there and I personally think dez explodes offensively this year if he stays healthy

If a vet wants to come in and play at the salary Hurd was making (1.4 mil a year) then yeah. If not, no.
