Mississippi State’s pro day on Thursday didn't draw much national attention, but that doesn't mean tackle Derek Sherrod isn't a sought after NFL prospect.

After Sherrod’s athletic performance at the Senior Bowl, NFL personnel men have been talking about him as a first-round prospect. After his on-campus workout Thursday, there should be no doubt he will be a first-round pick and he might've surpassed Colorado's Nate Solder on teams' rankings of the tackles.

Sherrod was worked out by two NFL line coaches, and he showed the good footwork, quickness, balance and agility throughout all the drills.

For a 6-5, 320-pound man, Sherrod looked light on his feet and showed everyone he will be able to handle speed rushers and protect an NFL quarterback's blind side.

Sherrod’s teammate, defensive end Pernell McPhee, displayed the athleticism he showed all season on film. NFL scouts aren't sure what position he fits, though. On Thursday, he displayed rare flexibility, balance and body control for a 270-pound end. However, he is not a quick-twitch athlete.

Most coaches using a 4-3 defense had figured he only fit as a strongside end, but after today’s workout they have real questions as to whether he can pressure the QB from that spot. So, 4-3 teams probably downgraded him Thursday. On the other hand, his combination of athleticism and strength could make him a good fit at end in a 3-4 scheme if able to bulk up.
