Sherrington: Loss to Eagles on Sunday can only benefit Cowboys come draft day

SportsDayDFW.com columnist Kevin Sherrington chatted with fans on Wednesday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:

I'm going to the Cowboys game on Sunday. Should I hope for a loss and get a top-5 draft pick or a win over the hated Eagles?

First one is a good one. If the Eagles bench all their starters, I think the Cowboys win this one. But you're right to secretly root for a loss. The closer the Cowboys could get to drafting LSU's great cornerback, Patrick Peterson, the better.

Do you think the Cowboys have a safety (Akwasi, Church, Sendejo) on the roster that can start next year, and do we finally put Jay Ratliff at DE on DeMarcus Ware's side?

No idea about any of those safeties because they haven't played much, but the position definitely is a concern. Sensabaugh's not a hitter and Ball hasn't shown the instincts. The Cowboys have just as many concerns in the secondary as they do in the OL. Maybe more. They have to address those in the draft and probably in free agency.

What are you so sure about Jason Garrett getting the head coaching position?

Because, as much as it makes my brain hurt, you have to think like Jerry thinks. A reader brought up a great point this morning. The former Cowboy assistant who's had the greatest success recently is Sean Payton. Jerry loved Sean, but he likes Garrett even more. I'm sure Jerry sees this all over again. Besides, it makes Jerry look smart for hiring him in the first place, he gets to keep business as usual, and he doesn't have to break in a head coach who might try to wrest more control than Jerry wants to give up.

Which is why you should be hoping for a new coach in the offseason.
