SportsDayDFW.com columnist Kevin Sherrington chatted with fans on Wednesday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:
So if Jason Garrett is the head coach, then who is the defensive coordinator?
No idea who Garrett might want, but Dom Capers is a great defensive mind. He'd also give Jason the benefit of a guy who's been a head coach. Runs the 3-4, too. Garrett needs to assert himself if he gets the job and tell Jerry he has to have his own staff. He could keep a couple of guys - Pasqualoni's a keeper, although probably not as a DC - but he has to put his stamp on this team. He can't struggle.
It looks like it took Philly only one year to turn around their team and be great. Why is this so hard for the Cowboys to emulate?
The Cowboys have fundamental foundation problems that start with Jerry. They don't have that problem in Philly. The Cowboys have had problems for years in the OL, but Jerry hasn't addressed them properly in the draft. He's also hired an OC before he hired the head coach and saddled the head coach with a staff he didn't hire. He created problems for Wade because the line of authority was damaged. Jason has to correct all that. This is his chance. If Jerry won't give him the authority to hire his own staff, he should walk. This team could be turned around fairly quickly with the right moves.
In the unlikely event that Andrew Luck should fall to the Cowboys, would Jerry take him or would he squander the chance?
He'd probably trade out of it. It's an interesting choice, obviously. There's more risk with taking a QB than any other position. Look at Carson Palmer. He was supposed to be a no-brainer. QBs also cost more than any other position. I'm sure that's what factored into Jerry's decisions all those years he went without drafting a QB until he got Quincy Carter. But you have to draft them. Not only for the future, but as an investment. Teams like Green Bay have done very well drafting QBs and, when they don't need them, trading them for multiple picks.
