Sherrington: If David Buehler misses a critical kick, he may get the boot

07:51 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Columnist Kevin Sherrington answered your questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

AJR asks ... the lack of discipline on the Cowboys is becoming an annual concern. Where do you attribute your blame for that by percentage?

Kevin Sherrington: Gerry Fraley writes that a lack of accountability overall plagues the Cowboys, and I agree with that. It's the culture of the Cowboys. Jerry has a tendency to take chances on players who have failed repeatedly. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. But it doesn't lend to a consistent atmosphere.

Rickster asks ... When Cowboys won SBs in the early '90s, they focused on four offensive threats (other than Aikman) - Irvin, Novacek, Smith and Johnson. Do you think this team tries to spread the ball around too much to no avail?

Kevin Sherrington: One of the problems with many offensive coordinators is that they want to show you how smart they are. You're absolutely right about those Cowboys. That's what they did. And this team should do the same.

Carter asks ... if the Cowboys lose to the Bears, will there be any changes made? I can't see where Jerry could go if this all starts falling apart.

Kevin Sherrington: Do you mean firing coaches? That's not happening. Now, if Alex Barron has to play and hogties anyone again on a critical play, he may find himself unemployed. And rightly so. If David Buehler misses a critical kick, he may get the boot, too. But that will be the extent of it.

Bellman asks ... if you had one play to get five yards to win the game, who would you go to on the Cowboys? I don't think it's Jason Witten any more. I actually like the running game in that situation.

Kevin Sherrington: I'm not counting on any running back to get five yards on one play. I might throw it to Felix Jones. But my order of priorities would be this: Miles Austin, Witten, Jones, Dez Bryant, Marion Barber. And I wouldn't have Barber throwing any more passes, either. Fortunately, he was smart enough to throw that one away the other day. He should have told Tony to do the same before the half.

Brent asks ... after watching Sunday night's Cowboy game, I was left wondering again "How does Phillips keep a job?"

Kevin Sherrington: Because he generally ends up with a winning record. And he gets along with Jerry.

Barrett asks ... do you think the Cowboys-Bears game comes down to which quarterback doesn't screw it up for his team? Cutler vs. Romo is an interesting look at quarterbacks with reputations of taking chances, good and bad.

Kevin Sherrington: Excellent point. But of the two, Romo has a much better track record. I'm a little surprised that the Cowboys are 8.5-point favorites, though. Until the offensive line comes back healthy and proven, I wouldn't expect the Cowboys to be racking up points.

larry asks ... do you believe the Cowboys to the SB with this cast of characters on the sidelines?

Kevin Sherrington: I don't feel as good about their chances as I did before the season. That was one of the worst exhibitions I've ever seen from what was supposed to be a very good team. Plenty of time to turn things around, obviously, but it still bothers me that they tend to do stupid things. Case in point: Last year against Denver with the game on the line, Tony Romo threw twice to Sam Hurd, who was covered by Champ Bailey. This year, against Washington, in the critical last series they throw to Ogletree and Williams. What about Miles Austin? What about Dez Bryant? What about Jason Witten? How about putting the ball in the hands of your best players? Is it really that hard to figure out?

Seeing we are struggling at the moment to score touchdowns, from preseason until now, we need a kicker that can be clutch.

I don't want to get rid of Buehler, but he may need another off season to get this position down. I say give Matt Stover a call if David continues to miss FG's.

Dunno if you guys caught it, but Folk was 3-3 including a 48yd kick and Cundiff was 1-1. So far ex-Cowboys are 4-4 and Buehler is 0-1!
