SportsDayDFW.com columnist Kevin Sherrington chatted with fans on Wednesday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:

What do you think of the Rob Ryan hire?

It's an interesting hire. Clearly, the Cowboys want him to do for their defense what his brother has done for the Jets . They want more of an edge, and he might be able to do that. For the first time in the NFL, he'll have a great pass rusher in DeMarcus Ware. Now Jerry just has to get him a corner and a safety.

Was there something telling about how few candidates Jerry interviewed for his head coaching job?

He's interviewed fewer in the past. What it says is that he wanted Jason to have the job. I don't think that was necessarily the case when he made Jason the interim coach. I think he had as many questions as the rest of us. But when the Cowboys responded, I think Jerry was overjoyed. It confirmed that he had made the right choice in the first place. And he gets to carry on business as usual.

Where do you see the Cowboys going in free agency, the draft and trades?

Depends on what's available with the ninth pick. I'm guessing the top two CBs in the draft will be gone by then. That would have been my preference. They need a safety, too, but they also need a tackle. Nate Solder might be available then. They might consider that too high for a tackle of his potential. They need help in the OL right away, so I think they would consider adding a right tackle, maybe a guard, too. It’s very difficult to get a rookie who can step right in the OL.

Give me one reason to believe the Cowboys will be anything more than a .500 team next year. They cannot draft, Jerry makes the worst FA decisions, and the same players responsible for 5-10 this year are coming back. When is the media going to stop calling this team talented?

You have to understand that the media is not calling this team talented. Coaches and scouts are doing that, and the media just relays what they say. I think it's a talented team. It's just not a disciplined one. Not a lot of leadership. Maybe not the smartest team, either. Mike Jenkins is the perfect example. He does some things very well. But he's also very inconsistent, and he's quit on a couple of touchdown plays twice in a short career. I'd make an example of him and cut him. But they're already short on corners as it is. I think these are the type decisions they have to make for the good of the team. As for your one reason, I'd say that, given a full season, Garrett could win eight games. He won half that many in a half season.

Will Jerry go out in free agency and get the type of players that Rob Ryan would want to play his defense?

He'd be foolish if he didn't. He let Wade bring in Olshansky and Brooking. He'll do the same for Ryan, especially at a time when the team is in such dire straits. This is when Jerry is the most vulnerable. It's when the team is playing fairly well, with prospects of doing better, that Jerry gets too optimistic. He knows he needs help with this bunch.

Would Jerry consider Alabama’s Mark Ingram as a 9th pick? He may be available.

From what I read, that's too high to take Ingram. Not fast enough. Of course, scouts said the same about Emmitt Smith. I like Ingram. Very hard runner. But you've got to take the best talent available, and even though I'm not wild about the production of the Cowboys' running backs, I'd like to see what they could do with a good OL and a healthy Tony Romo. The complete package makes everyone better.

What's the percent chance of the Cowboys selecting a QB with their first round pick? Would Jerry pass on a QB like Cam Newton?

Yes, he would. Newton's an interesting thought, but this isn't a team that needs to start all over. When you substitute a rookie for a 31-year-old QB who's been to the Pro Bowl, you're starting all over. They've got other needs more pressing. And there are simply no guarantees about first-round QBs. I thought the Texans were idiots for not taking Vince Young. Newton is better than Young, but how long would it take for him to adjust to the pro game? He can't run all the time. He left the BCS title game with a bad back. Not a good sign.

It's going to really suck if there is no free agency prior to the draft.
