The San Diego Chargers won't be trading linebacker Shawne Merriman.

They placed him on injured reserve today with a calf injury.

For all effective purposes, Merriman won't play for the Chargers again.

The Chargers have signed linebacker Antwan Barnes to take Merriman's roster spot.

They placed him on injured reserve with a minor injury designation (less than six weeks), which means that Merriman has to be cut when he's healthy.

Merriman saw limited action in the season’s first five weeks. An Achilles injury forced him to miss the season opener in Kansas City.

He suffered a calf injury at Seattle and missed the team’s victory over Arizona in Week 4. He re-injured his calf last week in Oakland.

The Chargers now list four linebackers on injured reserve: Donald Butler, James Holt, Jyles Tucker and Merriman.

Linebacker Larry English also has missed three games and is expected to miss two to four more weeks.

Oct. 19 is the trade deadline, correct? It'll be interesting to see what they do with Vincent Jackson. Thing is, since the Chargers waited so long they may not get what they want for Jackson, becuase any team that trades for him, has to deal with the 4-game suspension. So basically, if no team trades for him, and Jackson signs his tender, and serves the suspension, come season end, he's a UFA, and the Chargers cannot franchise him---at least I don't think because of the CBA rules. So they lose out altogether, because their GM is trying to be an asshole.
