With the news that Cowboys backup quarterback Jon Kitna has informed team officials that he will retire, what's the next move for Dallas in filling a roster spot at quarterback?
Kitna retiring leaves the Cowboys with Tony Romo as the starting quarterback followed by Stephen McGee, who became the backup when Kitna was sidelined with his lingering back issue over the last seven games of the season.
At this point, has McGee shown the Cowboys enough to fully trust him as the team's backup quarterback in 2012, which will be the last year of his contract? The answer is probably not.
If the Cowboys decide to look elsewhere for a backup quarterback instead of going with McGee, there are several veteran quarterbacks who will be unrestricted free agents this off-season that could intrigue the Jones family.
Hey, Drew Brees will be a free agent when the playoffs end. Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. But these quarterbacks could be options if the Cowboys decide to sign a veteran backup for Romo:
• Charlie Batch, Pittsburgh
• Jason Campbell, Oakland
• David Carr, NY Giants
• A.J. Feeley, St. Louis
• Matt Flynn, Green Bay
• Rex Grossman, Washington
• Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh
• Kyle Orton, Kansas City
• Brady Quinn, Denver
• Charlie Whitehurst, Seattle
• Vince Young, Philadelphia
Do any of these quarterbacks do anything for you?
