Maybe it always works out this way, or our minds think it works this way. But is it me, or does there seem to be only about eight players in the upcoming draft. Fitting the Cowboys would be at No. 9.

Now, that’s just my opinion on who is elite and who isn’t. But of those “cant-miss” variety players, it appears like they will be gone when the Cowboys’ turn arrives at No. 9. That doesn’t mean something crazy doesn’t happen in those first eight.

But think about it from the Cowboys’ standpoint, there’s about five players that would make pretty good sense if they could them. Those guys include Nick Fairley, Marcell Dareus, DaQuan Bowers, Von Miller and Patrick Peterson – in no particular order, of course.

Then there’s two quarterbacks – Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton - the Cowboys hope are gone and a wide receiver A. J. Green.

Any of those first five players would probably work for the Cowboys, although Von Miller would be an interesting case because he’s considered a “tweener” in a 3-4 defense. Still, I would think the Cowboys would take him if he’s there.

But those five guys, mixed in with Gabbert, Newton and Green and that leaves a huge question mark regarding the next player to take. And that’ where the Cowboys’ cutoff line might be in regards to a possible trade-down scenario.

If any of those five, and let’s throw in A.J. Green because he’s such a talented player that you’d have to consider it – any of those six were available then you stay there and draft. If not, try to find a willing partner to move down.

Maybe I’m missing some really good players. And there are more than eight good players in this draft. But in terms of “elite” prospects, I’m getting the feeling it might cut off right before the Cowboys’ pick. Of course, the draft is still about six weeks away. Lots can, and probably will, change between now and then.
