Searching For Value In The Second Round
Posted by jellis at 2/28/2012 10:35 AM CST on dallascowboys.com
The last two years, the Cowboys have taken some players with major injury red flags in the second round. They definitely hit on Sean Lee, and Bruce Carter could be starting alongside him this year.

Could this be a long-term strategy for the Cowboys? They went for the sure thing in the first round last year with Tyron Smith, but rolled the dice in Round 2. The Cowboys have gambled quite a bit in the draft over the years, and whether or not those picks paid off has often had a make-or-break effect on the draft.

You expect to get a good player in the first round and the second round, too, but the odds aren't as good. If the second-rounder works out, usually, it's been a good April.

"I'd say it's the caliber of player that are in those first 32 players that you get to choose from," Jerry Jones said. "You notice how great your drafts are when you have two No. 1s, because with both those picks, you're up in those first 30 players. And so I think it's that simple. I think it's just a question of you've got better players to choose from the earlier you pick."

While Carter progressed as planned last year, coming back from knee surgery to play on special teams, there's no way to know if the 2011 second-round pick was well-used until a few games have been played next season.

"I hope we're as good with Carter as we were with Lee," Jones said. "Both those guys we had as first rounders, and that's what you'd like to have. Flozell Adams was in our top 20 players, (Andre) Gurode was in our top 20 players.

"You should, if you're in that second round, especially if you are, let's say, down at the mid-round, then you should be picking a player, and can be, more often than not, a player that you have in your top 20 players in the first round. That's ideal. When you can do that, you should be having some pretty big success."

We've been doing the risky 2nd round pick dance since 2001.

Does it look like this?

Pretty decent success with it IMO since Big Bill came in. The only bad picks were Jacob Rogers and Julius Jones. I don't understand the Fasano/bennett thing but they'll both be players in this league for 8-10 years probably, so good picks. No great players (maybe Lee someday) but if every player you pick in the second round for the last decade is a long-term NFL starter you are doing it right.

If they are a long-term NFL starter for your team, then yeah.

Otherwise, what's the point if they're one contract (or less) and done?

Meh. It's not good practice to pick hit or miss players.

I think you misinterpret what hit or miss means. Sean Lee and Bruce Carter both carried 1st round grades, according to the Dallas scouts.

Talented players coming off injury qualify as risky value picks. This thread is about second round value? Your first post in this thread was about risky picks. Welcome to the draft. We've "hit" on second round risky draft picks pretty well since 2003. Hello.

We hit on 1. We've only drafted 2 risky value picks.

The gist of the article was taking red-flag players in the 2nd round because it happened to work out once. My point is that to turn that into a trend is not good practice.

We know they tried at least 2 or 3 times to trade back into the first from round two last year. Wouldnt be surprised if they tried again this year, depending on who happens to be available.

I can see sitting on our pick and making a surprise QB pick (Osweiler) OR
I can see us moving up in the late 1st/early 2nd round and taking someone like Harrison Smith or a pass rusher who starts slipping.

I'm hoping that player is Nick Perry. I'm still on board with picking DeCastro at 14 if he's best available.

I know Perry had a nice Combine but he's the one I want in the second round if we go DeCastro at 14.

There's so many different scenarios that could play out though. We'll have a better idea after free agency and when the first part of the draft plays out, obviously.

My first three picks would be DeCastro, Perry, Gilmore or Minniefield. That's if Perry slides. The OLB/DE prospects are deep in this years draft.
