DeMarco Murray brings a punishing running style to the Cowboys.

DeMARCO MURRAY
Picked: Third round (71st overall)
Position: RB

Second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2009. Honorable mention as a freshman in 2007. … Rushed for 1,214 yards and 15 touchdowns on 282 carries and caught 71 passes for 594 yards and five touchdowns as a senior.

Size: 5-foot-11 5/8, 213 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.39

Broaddus Breakdown (viewed Texas and Oklahoma State games): Is a bit of an upright runner but is not afraid to take the ball hard downhill when he gets to the outside. Like the way he tries to punish the defender with his running style. Early in the Texas game, he took it hard on the edge to Aaron Williams, but to Williams credit, he didn’t shy away from the contact, either. … Has the vision to see the hole and get into it then make a cut. Can see blocks develop quickly, make a cut and then gets where he needs to be. … Plays with a burst and is extremely quick-footed. Shows balance with the ability to plant then cut. … If he has a weakness, he needs to do a better job of breaking tackles. Did see him come down with some arm tackles. … Plays with soft hands as a receiver. Will line up all over the formation. Has been used out of the backfield, in the slot and even out wide as a receiver. Does not fight the ball at all when it's thrown his direction. Is a solid route runner that gets open with a purpose. Can make catches in the open field and just not out of the backfield. Of his 64 college touchdowns, 11 of them were as a pass receiver. … Can make things happen with the ball in his hands. … Will need to be trained as a pass protector in the NFL game because of his initial role should be that of a third-down back. If he learns quickly how to pass protect, will see action much sooner in his pro career because he has the other skills to be productive on offense. … Before the draft, what the Cowboys scouting department was looking for was a back that could play on third downs but also help on special teams. Murray can help as a kick returner because in his career he averaged over 27 yards a return. Like his pass blocking, if can he develop in other areas on special teams as a cover man and blocker, he will be a nice fit to the type of back the scouts were searching for.

I still can't believe we have 4 (semi)decent RB's and ZERO quality safeties.

Still not a fan of this pick. I might go sbkTnew on Murray - hold a grudge for years, even if he turns into a productive player for us.

I like the pick of murray. It feels like he is a fit for what we want to do offensively. He seems to be a guy that can stay on the field all 3 downs. With him and felix you can have the same style of player on the field at all times. With our athletic tackles it is going to create alot of ability to use the spacing that this Coryell-zampese-turner offense (the real west coast offense) relies on.

It seems similar to when bill walsh took roger craig. Maybe not the greatest running back to run the ball ever but a perfect fit for the system, 3 down player who can really catch the ball.

I think we have to assume the short pass and yac will be a big player. Much like it is in the bill walsh offense...or the fake west coast offense if you will.

That sounds encouraging, Theebs. Really, it does. But I had visions of Will Rackley in the third.

If DeMarco Murray has any sense, he's not only hoping that he excells, and that Rackley busts. Only then will I reflect positively upon this selection. Hell, in 5 years, after I've burned bridges between myself and Sheik, and Sacamano and I have started our own forum (http://dallascowboysuniversezonecentral.com), I might tell the members there how I was behind this selection from jump street.

Actually on further youtubings I think the guy can play and will overtake Feliz(Not saying much). But our line depth is so weak they are talking 3 year deal for Kosier and hanging onto Davis 1 more year. And RB's are always floating around.
