Schefter: Dalton, Ponder both likely to go in first round
Posted by Evan Silva on April 21, 2011, 4:03 PM EDT

PFT’s Mike Florio reported late Wednesday that the Cincinnati Bengals will be working out two quarterbacks in Texas on Friday: Christian Ponder of Florida State and Andy Dalton of TCU.

Just reading the tea leaves, the Bengals’ draft strategy — based on the two “eleventh hour” workouts — is to select Georgia receiver A.J. Green with the fourth overall pick and pray Dalton or Ponder falls to their second-rounder at No. 35.

The second part probably won’t happen, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“It doesn’t look like either Christian Ponder or Andy Dalton,” Schefter said on SportsCenter Thursday, “is going to make it into the second round.”

Let’s assume the Bengals stick to the first portion of their apparent strategy. They’ll probably have to trade back into the first round for a quarterback. a costly proposition that will require multiple draft picks that otherwise could be used to fill Cincinnati’s numerous holes on defense.

The logic of drafting a receiver before a quarterback is obviously flawed, particularly when the biggest weakness on the roster is the most important position in pro sports. But Bengals owner Mike Brown is still holding out hope that Carson Palmer changes his mind about retirement.

It’s going to hurt when he doesn’t.

Ok... then who would take Ponder or Dalton in the 1st?

There's been some talk that Jacksonville might take Ponder with their pick in the first round. Indy , New Orleans and New England have both been sniffing around QB's too.

I think a team like Seattle would if they don't take Locker.

Remember, Ponder had a good Senior Bowl and combine, he's also very smart, he'll go no later than 41 which is Washington's pick.

Almost any of the teams in the top 10 (except Dallas & Cleveland) are candidates to trade back into the late first for a QB if they don't land either Newton or Cam.

I think Minnesota, Seattle, Jacksonville, & Miami are all strong candidates to either reach for a QB where they pick, or trade back in the first for one.

Right. I don't think Miami will though seeing they have to shore up the offensive line and add another back with Ricky being older with their first pick.

It's either Pouncey or Ingram for the Dolphins I think.

Miami doesn't pick again after the first round until round 3 pick 79 so it might take a little to trade back into the second.
