Since Montrae Holland arrived in Dallas in 2008, he has played a reserve role on the offensive line. Once a starter in Denver, he now has an opportunity to become one again in his ninth season in the NFL. After right guard Leonard Davis was cut Thursday, Holland is expected to be elevated on the depth chart and he appears eager to play an expanded role.
"Yeah, I'm ready," said Holland, who was wearing a big smile on his face. "I finally have an opportunity to do what I do and I'm happy for it."
Last season, Holland played 177 snaps, lining up on both sides of the offensive line -- one that has been remade in recent months. Davis and right tackle Marc Colombo, who was also released Wednesday, are gone. And it's expected that Holland will be positioned next to first-round draft pick Tyron Smith.
Smith participated in the Thursday afternoon session of practice and struggled at times.
"I'm not going to lie," he said. "It's challenging. It kicked my butt today. It's going to take steps to get into it."
Holland agrees but he is confident that he, Smith and the other three members of the offensive line can function well as a unit.
"We've got to get together first and get our chemistry going," Holland said. "But I think' we'll do good."
