By Rainer Sabin / Reporter
The buzz words that echoed at Valley Ranch on Thursday were "versatile" and "flexible." During a meet-and-greet session with reporters, almost every Cowboys defensive assistant used them, in various parts of speech, to describe defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's 3-4 scheme. They gushed over Ryan's ability to present different looks within a malleable system they say can change from one week to the next.
"We've got so much versatility in the package," said new defensive line coach Brian Baker. "We can do whatever. Rob...he isn't one of those guys who is looking at a deal where he says, 'We've got to do it this way.' We're going to do whatever we have to do to win."
Ryan has earned a reputation around the league for using exotic blitzes and exploring new avenues to attack the quarterback. With a missionary's zeal, Ryan has sold his philosophy to the holdovers from the previous staff. One of the recent converts is secondary coach Dave Campo, who has quickly become a believer in the new defensive coordinator's philosophy.
"We're going to do just about everything," Campo said with a wide smile. "I'm really excited. He's got great enthusiasm and he understands the pressure game and understands the scheme."
It's a scheme the members of the Cowboys' coaching staff -- both new and old -- apparently can't wait to execute.
