Roster Rundown
Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer
(Editor's Note: Throughout the offseason, DallasCowboys.com staff writers will take a closer look at the roster, analyzing each player's impact last season and how he fits into the team's 2011 plans. Today's featured player is wide receiver Titus Ryan.)
Name: Titus Ryan
Position: Wide Receiver
Height/Weight: 6-0, 190
Experience: 1 season
College: Concordia College
Key stat: It's not really a stat - since Ryan doesn't have any in the NFL - but more of a figure. In 2007, Ryan was clocked at Alabama's Pro Day running a 4.28 in the 40-yard dash. Sure it's been four years, but at age 26, Ryan shouldn't be too far off - if any - from that world-class speed.
Contract Status: Signed through 2012.
2010 Impact: Ryan didn't have any impact on the season after suffering a thumb injury in the preseason opener against Cincinnati. He was viewed as a possible candidate to make the squad as both a punt and kickoff returner, and in the summer OTAs and early in camp, Ryan was praised by QB Tony Romo. And he might have made the roster, but since his injury would've likely wiped out the remaining preseason games, the Cowboys were forced to give him an injury settlement.
Where He Fits: One year later, it would seem to be that much harder for Ryan to land a spot on the roster. Especially if his forte - kick returning - has been diminished somewhat because of the new kickoff rules. But he does have speed and quickness at the receiver spot and that's always good enough to stick around if he can make some plays.
Writers' Analysis:
Nick Eatman: While I don't really think he would have made the team even without the injury, Ryan might have made things interesting. Serving as the punt and kickoff returner - even in preseason games - all it takes is one or two big returns and it makes it difficult to be released. Ryan is certainly one of the guys rooting for an end to this lockout. He will need as much training camp and preseason games as possible.
Josh Ellis: Evidently there was something the Cowboys saw in Ryan that they liked before the injury, otherwise they wouldn't have brought him back for another opportunity. He's stuck behind a number of guys at wide receiver, and would basically be competing for the final roster spot with someone like Jesse Holley, Dwayne Harris or Kevin Ogletree. To make it, he's going to have to really stand out in kickoff and punt coverage. If there's a rash of injuries in camp this year, though, you never know.
