Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has had several good pass-rushers since he’s been coaching. Whether it’s Willie McGinest or Mike Vrabel – whom he had in New England, Ryan seems to get the best out of the talent he has.
But Ryan says he’s never had anything close to DeMarcus Ware.
“No, the closest I had was Derrick Burgess,” Ryan said. “He led the league in sacks one year.”
Playing for the Raiders, Burgess did have 16 sacks in 2005, the first of two straight Pro Bowl seasons while playing in Ryan’s defense. In nine seasons, Burgess played four years under Ryan – all in Oakland. Of his 52 career sacks, 38.5 have occurred under Ryan. Still, none of these guys compare to Ware.
“I’ve had some good players, but I don’t think I’ve had anything like DeMarcus – that type of player,” Ryan said. “We won’t screw him up. We just make him better.”
Ware can only hope so, considering he’s led the league in sacks two of the last three seasons. Ware had 15.5 sacks in 2010 to give him 80 for his career. This past year, Ware moved into eighth place on the Cowboys’ all-time sacks list, surpassing Greg Ellis (77.0 sacks).
