Last week, Roy Williams emphatically stated he wanted to retire as a member of the Cowboys. But days later Williams seemed open to the possibility of playing elsewhere if he is forced to do so.

"I'd love to be here," he said. "I want to be here. If not, I will play ball somewhere else."

Next season, Williams will make $5.1 million, a base salary befitting of a player who is a top-flight receiver but not one who is merely an accessory to the offense. If he stays on board next season, the cap figure assigned to Williams would be $9.48 million. When factoring his productivity with the financial figures, it seems probable that the Cowboys will try to renegotiate with Williams.

But when asked last week if he is willing to engage in those discussions, Williams, who has already received $19.5 million in option bonuses, dodged the question.

"Me staying here?" he said. "I like my shot. I like my chances."

In recent months, Williams has been relegated to the fringes of the Cowboys' offense. During the last nine games he's played, he has made only 15 receptions for 218 yards. To put that output in perspective, Reggie Wayne accounted for 14 catches and 200 yards against the Cowboys...in one afternoon.

While Williams has been bothered by a groin injury he suffered earlier this month, interim head coach Jason Garrett wouldn't say if his decline in production can be attributed to that particular problem.

"He was working his way through it," Garrett said Monday.

Williams, though, did have an answer.

"I got injured last week, two weeks ago," he said. "My numbers dropped week six, week seven....It's kind of disappointing."

At this point, the Cowboys' front office would probably agree.

No way, keep the dude. Unless there is a worthy replacement somewhere else. He is no more then a 3rd. Dallas can't get the picks back, let it go. He can still produce as long as this team isn't relying on him. He is gutless to me. but, better then what Dallas has.
