Obviously, the Cowboys are going to go out of their way to build up Jon Kitna now that he takes over for the injured Tony Romo.

But no one was more effusive than receiver Roy Williams.

"Tony is our starter, but Jon is just as good,'' said Williams, who enjoyed the best season of his professional career when Kitna started in Detroit. "We are going to work this week in practice so we can get the timing down with the receivers. But I have complete faith in him. I have played with him for three years and I know how good he is.''

What can Cowboys fans expect from Kitna?

"He will put the ball where it needs to be,'' Williams said. "Is he going to be perfect? Of course not. There isn't a quarterback in this league that is perfect. He is going to make mistakes but we have to help him.''

Kitna's final numbers don't look too bad - 16 of 33, 187 yards, two touchdowns and no picks - but they don't tell the full story of what happened to the Cowboys when they lost Romo to a fractured collarbone.

On the first 21 plays with Kitna at quarterback, they gained 47 yards. It was 20-7 after Dez Bryant's punt return for a touchdown but New York had a 38-20 advantage with 5:25 left in the third quarter.

"I thought Jon was rusty," Wade Phillips said. "It just took him awhile to get going and once he did it gave us a chance."

In the fourth quarter, Kitna completed 11 of 21 passes for 160 yards with both of his touchdown passes to Dez Bryant. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Kitna should be better with a full week of practice in getting ready for his first start since 2008.

"Every week is different in this league," Kitna said. "I have learned that over the years and you just have to prepare as well as you can. We always talk about staying ahead of the chains. You don't want to have third and 7 in this league. That is a defensive advantage and when I first got in that is what kept happening. We weren't having much success on first and second down."

He and Kitna have history together.

I don't care that he said this.

I mean . . . it's stupid, but it's his boy. Whatever.
