Sean Lissemore had a productive game in his rookie debut last year against Jacksonville.
(Editor's Note: Throughout the offseason, DallasCowboys.com staff writers will take a closer look at the roster, analyzing each player's impact last year and how he fits into the team's 2011 plans. Today's featured player is defensive end Sean Lissemore.)
Name: Sean Lissemore
Position: Defensive End
Height/Weight: 6-6/355
Experience: 1 season
College: William & Mary
Key stat: There weren't many stats to choose from for Lissemore, who played in basically just one game last season. But when you consider he registered a half-sack, another quarterback pressure and three tackles in just a handful of snaps, it's obviously enough to be intrigued about.
Contract Status: Signed through 2013.
2010 Impact: The opportunities were obviously limited and there are certain reasons for that. Lissemore wasn't even active until the sixth game of the season against Jacksonville after the Cowboys suffered another D-line injury to Jason Hatcher. Lissemore, a seventh-round pick from William & Mary, needed some expected time to get acclimated to the bigger, faster league. But he looked right at home against the Jaguars, being disruptive in several instances. While the Cowboys were hoping it was the start of a promising young season. Instead, the next week in Green Bay, Lissemore suffered a high-ankle sprain on the opening kickoff and his season was over. While the Cowboys did try to wait three weeks to see if he could recover, Lissemore was eventually placed on IR when the club needed the roster spot.
Where He Fits: Way too early to tell. Lissemore must take the wait-and-see approach as the Cowboys figure out their defensive line position and make decisions on free agents such as Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen and Hatcher. Depending on the rules of the new CBA, all of them could be unrestricted free agents. For sure, Spears will be able to test the waters. So where that leaves Lissemore is a good question. But the Cowboys did not draft any defensive ends this past April, even in the later rounds. It's likely that Lissemore will have a solid chance to compete for a roster spot again, especially if the club gets thinned out at defensive end in free agency.
Writers' Analysis:
Nick Eatman: There's two ways to look at this scenario regarding Sean Lissemore. On one hand, he could feel pretty confident that he has a chance to not only make the team, but also have a significant role. The Cowboys have three veteran free agents and it's unlikely they will re-sign them all. They could only bring back one of them. Now Lissemore could be very positive about the situation and figure he has a great chance to make the team and play decent snaps. On the other hand, he was a seventh-round pick in 2010 from a small school who only played one game last year. If the Cowboys sign a few defensive ends in rookie free agency, Lissemore won't and shouldn't be that much ahead of them on the depth chart. He'll have to again battle his way on to the roster.
Josh Ellis: Without seeing more of Lissemore, it's awfully tough to say what he can or can't do in his career. In the few opportunities he got to play, he did seem to be flying around quite a bit, but just like that he was hurt again. Judging by the sheer numbers at the position right now, I would say there is a good chance he is back on the team and, if healthy, could be active most weeks, but he's still got to earn that. He seems to be plenty athletic enough, and we'll just see how much strength he added over the summer.
