Roster Rundown

Another Shot For Ogletree To Emerge

Josh Ellis
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

(Editor's Note: Throughout the offseason, DallasCowboys.com staff writers will take a closer look at the roster, analyzing each player's impact last season and how he fits into the team's 2011 plans. Today's featured player is wide receiver Kevin Ogletree.)

Name: Kevin Ogletree
Position: Wide Receiver
Height/Weight: 6-1/198
Experience: Two seasons
College: Virginia

Key stat: After emerging early in 2009 as an every-week performer, Ogletree didn't record his first catches of the season until Dec. 12. Instead of taking the next step, he became a regular scratch in his second year, mainly because the Cowboys needed better contributions from their wide receiver position on special teams.

Contract Status: Signed through 2011.

2010 Impact: There were whispers in last year's training camp that Ogletree had not returned for his second season with the same work ethic and drive that helped make him a pleasant surprise as a rookie. Whether or not that is what held him back in 2010 is hard to say, because the field was crowded at his position from the start. The same opportunities that had been there for Ogletree in the previous regular season suddenly evaporated with Dez Bryant's introduction to the offense, and the former undrafted free agent gave way to Jesse Holley, who was better on kickoff and punt coverage. Ogletree was inactive for a seven-week stretch in the middle of the season, and didn't make a contribution offensively until the Sunday night game against the Eagles in Week 14, looking solid with three first half catches before he was injured early in the third quarter.

Where He Fits: It would appear Ogletree has the same opportunities and challenges that faced him in 2010, with the top of the wide receiver depth chart identical to what it was when the 2010 season began. Miles Austin, Roy Williams and Bryant will be the main guys, in some order, so Ogletree will have to prove he is more capable on special teams or the kind of spark plug the offense can't do without.

Writers' Analysis:

Josh Ellis: Personally, I think I have a little more faith in Ogletree than some within the Cowboys coaching staff and front office. Maybe covering kicks isn't his forte - he's not the biggest guy and isn't really used to tackling - but good things seem to happen when he's in the game offensively. He had a nice little preseason last year, but that obviously didn't translate to regular season success. He'll be pushed for a roster spot by rookie Dwayne Harris. A tie probably goes to the rookie.

Nick Eatman: Heading into last year, a lot of us thought Ogletree was primed and ready to take the next step as a receiver, and possibly push for a third or fourth spot. It just never materialized. But it seems like he'll be right in the same spot once again. It'll help his chances if the Cowboys part ways with Williams, but even with him here, there is no reason why Ogletree can't become the fourth or fifth receiver on this team.

He's a forgotten disappointment in a season full of disappointments.

I homer'd out on him after 2009, but I think Harris comes in to camp as the better receiver and special teamer already.

Unless we keep 6 receivers, he's a goner.

I homered out on him as well but I am not ready to give up yet. Drop Roy and Hurd and keep these young guys who have something to prove.

IMO, the first four receivers should be set. Harris has to earn it, but I expect him to.

Ogletree can be the 5th receiver. If he comes in with the right attitude. He may not want to be here though if he sees another WR brought in ahead of him on the depth chart.
