He's basically forced his way off the Raiders and will be released tomorrow. I know he's had some off-the-field concerns but this kid was a monster at Alabama. I would hope we seriously consider claiming him although I'm sure one of the 16 teams ahead of us will snatch him.
Screw Garrett's RKG crap, this would be a steal and give us 3 of the top young ILB's in the League (and allow a move to a 4-3?). McClain is only 23 (3 years younger than Sean Lee). He was the 8th overall pick in 2010. Garrett worships Nick Saban so maybe Garrett would reach out to Saban to get his take on McClain.
Claiming means we would owe him the remainder of his $970k, a base of $4.05M in 2013, and a base of $5.805M in 2014. The good thing is since we would be claiming him on waivers we could release him with no cap hit if he doesn't work out or has more off-the-field crap OR sign him to a cap friendly deal if he behaves. New deal = new signing bonus = guaranteed money so the player is almost always interested in these kind of deals.
I know this probably isn't going to happen but you get very few chances to steal a player like this.
