Leadership can't be quantified by a statistic. It is an intangible quality and some fans believe Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo doesn't have it. They're quick to point to the fact that he's won only one playoff game in five years since becoming the primary starter at the premier offensive position. They also mention his love affair with golf -- a sport that his critics say distracts him from his primary occupation during the offseason..

But former Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach said the verbal attacks directed toward Romo are unwarranted and baseless.

"I don't understand that," Staubach said Monday at the Pat Summerall Humble Beginnings Award luncheon. "He is a fierce competitor. He works out. He's with his team during the season. He's one heckuva football player. I think he has been a leader. Leaders -- you mature as you get experience yourself at that position. But the players like him. And look what he's done. He's accomplished a lot."

Romo, in fact, has been invited to the Pro Bowl three times and his quarterback rating of 95.5 is the fourth-highest in NFL history. He is 39-22 as a starter and has completed 64.1 percent of the 2,070 passes he's attempted during his career. At the luncheon, where he was being honored, Dallas coach Jason Garrett related a story about how his father, Jim, now a retired scout, helped discover Romo with the aid of former Cowboys assistant Sean Payton.

"I'm glad it worked out the way it did," Garrett said.

So is Staubach.

"He hasn't been the problem," Staubach said. "He's done unbelievable. He's right at the top of the NFL as far as a quarterback -- as far as his statistics and the things he does.
He moves around the pocket. He makes great plays.

"Our quarterback is not our problem in Dallas. We've got a Super Bowl quarterback...I really believe that the league is so close in parity...and Dallas is the kind of team with Jason [Garrett] that they can be right there in the thick of it this year...And they have the quarterback that can do it.
