By the numbers, Rob Ryan's defenses in Oakland and Cleveland improved but never became dominant. The difference, presumably, is that Ryan is inheriting more talent in Dallas than he had in either previous stop.

He has two front-seven building blocks in outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware and nose tackle Jay Ratliff -- both 2010 Pro Bowl picks. Both starting cornerbacks, Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins, have made the Pro Bowl before.

That's four players with all-star credentials in the last two years. By comparison, Ryan had two in seven years as a defensive coordinator: Raiders defensive end Derrick Burgess (2005, 2006) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (2006, 2008). None with the Browns, though guys like Shaun Rogers and Joe Haden are pretty good players.

One can argue that as the defensive architect, Ryan has a large hand in developing Pro Bowl players. But Asomugha might be the only player he's coached that's really considered an elite defender.

In Dallas, he has at least two -- not to mention a Cowboys offense with much more talent than Oakland's or Cleveland's. That also could make his job easier.
