The reason why I liked.... strike that... loved the Rob Ryan hire was two-fold:

First, I thought he was the kind of coordinator who took it to the offense. I thought we'd be witnessing an array of different fronts, coverages, blitzes, schemes, etc that would keep offenses off balance, and prevent QB's from getting comfortable

This clearly isn't the case. All year, with the exception of a good quarter or half here or there, we've not been able to generate consistant pressure, and our coverage units have been terrible. Worse off, we're still prone to give up scoring drives in critical situations.

What happened to that Amoeba Defense we heard so much about?

Why do we never run a 4-6 front? We did so in 2008 under Wade and it was successful.

Yesterday, during pre-game, it was said that Rob Ryan stated we were going to bring pressure against the Cardinals. That was the emphasis. And it worked in the first half. We got home a lot... what, 5 sacks in the first half?

What did the Cardinals do in the second half that made that pass rush virtually non-existant, and why couldn't we make adjustments on our end?

Secondly, I liked his swagger and attitude. I liked the "We're going to kick your ass mentality." I thought it would rub off on the players, and they'd play with confidence and aggression.

Clearly, that hasn't been the case. Our guys still have no confidence, and they're not backing up Ryans mouth.

I'm not sure the point of this thread, other than me bitching some more. I'm off the Rob Ryan bandwagon.

I'd almost welcome a return to the 4-3 after this year. We've been a shitty 3-4 team for years and I'm over it.

I hate this team. And I hate all of you.

You could transition to a 4-3 pretty easily. Ratliff, Hatcher, Brent, Spears inside...Hatcher would probably play strongside DE though, opposite Ware. Lee in the middle, Carter weakside, FA addition...there is your front 7.

Yeah, I loved the idea of moving to a 3-4 when Parcells wanted to do it because I had visions of the Steelers and Ravens - confusing offenses with sending that 4th or 5th guy, and them not knowing where they're coming from.

But we've gone through 3 different DC's, and none of them have been able to make it work effectively in Dallas.

Might as well go back to the 4-3.

Rex and Rob both run the 3-4 but their father's best defense was the Bears, who ran the 4-3.

I like the 3-4 but since we have absolutely refused to add a space-taking NT, I am ready to go to a 4-3. With upcoming free agents Anthony Spencer, Bradie James, and Keith Brooking we may be poised to make the move. DeMarcus Ware will be the same exact player he is now as a 4-3 DE (think Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen). Two DT's would put more beef on the ball and I honestly think Spears would do better as a 4-3 DT. Bruce Carter was an amazing weakside OLB at North Carolina. We would just need to sign or draft a Strongside linebacker.

Another bonus of the 4-3 is it takes pressure off the Safeties.

Yep, was thinking the same thing myself. Spears actually played LDE in the 4-3 at LSU under Saban and was good at it, he could play there now too. Although moving him inside might work as well. Lissemore could flourish in a 4-3 inside as well I think, and Ratliff definitely would.

For some reason, I'm still willing to give Ryan a pass this year.

Maybe it's the fact that he's working with the same group of losers Wade was working with.

I know Sean Lee is pretty much a new addition, Elam too, but Lee is very limited in what he can do right now with the cast and Elam isn't anything spectacular.

Id like to see Ryan's defense with another solid corner besides Jenkins, a healthy Sean Lee and a decent pass rusher opposite Ware.

I think the thinig that concerns me is that other teams seem to be able to make adjustments to beat us, but we cannot do the same. We killed them in the first half on the defensive side of the ball, but we had no answer in the 2nd half.

I'm ok with him staying or going, but if he goes and we get somebody like Mike Nolan I'd be happier.

We have some good players on defense and they still have long stretches of games when they play awful. I dont think the Dolphins or Cardinals have as much talent as we do overall on defense, and both those teams have improved steadily as the year has worn on and in both games where we played them, they didnt struggle to slow us down at all. Their blitzes worked over and over. For whatever reason both teams somehow got Romo to throw into coverages. You rarely see that with Ryan's scheme.

I am all for 4-3. Ware needs to be rushing all the time-not dropping into coverage. But this creates another problem at olb. I'd go after Osi(giants de) move carter to olb and draft another lb. Ware,Ratliff, hatchet, osi with lee,carter,FA/draft pic at LB.

There is that.

Someone with more knowledge of Ryan's past defenses than myself would have to answer this next question, as I've never paid much attention to him or his teams. . .

Had this been a problem with his defenses in the past?

It's probably frustration with the players on my part, but I think this group is just plain stupid. Incapable of thinking on the fly and adjusting to what's happening from half to half.

Ryan has at least shown some competence and ability to make adjustments. He's had some defensive breakdowns, but he doesn't exactly have the smartest and best talent out there either. That would be why I'm willing to wait and let him get his system installed.

Garrett on the other hand has shown nothing to give me any hope. He has been here for years now and has had a direct say in personnel. He has a stacked team of talented feature players and he just flat out sucks. I hate him so much. So so much.
