IRVING, Texas -- Line one, as Jason Garrett likes to say, for Cowboys players and coaches is to have emotion, passion and enthusiasm.

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has all three.

“They’re getting a fun guy that loves football, man,” said Cleveland defensive back DeAngelo Smith. “He sleeps at the office. He’s a players’ coach. I think the Cowboys will really enjoy him being there. He’s going to make the game fun and they’re going to have fun.”

Smith was a fifth round pick of the Cowboys in 2009 and spent last season on the Browns’ practice squad. Knowing the Cowboys’ personnel, Smith believes Ryan will be a good fit.

“It’s more of a pressure-type defense and he’s got that pass rush up front,” Smith said. “You’ve got D-Ware and [Anthony] Spencer and [Jay] Ratliff, that front they push the pocket. And you know he brings pressure. It helps everybody out. It’s a fun defense to play. You get to man-up outside and show what you got and you’ve got the interior doing what they do best.”

"Man up on the outside"

It sounds like Rob prefers man-to-man as opposed to zone... At least for the underneath pass defense.

Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I prefer zone. I think it allows your cover guys to get their eyes in the backfield, putting them in a better situation to make a play.

Actually, I prefer a mix of coverages to keep the QB guessing, but if I have to pick either/or, I would pick zone.

You hit the big advantage of zone. Facing the QB.

But boy, do the guys in the secondary f'up their coverage responsibilities when playing zone. Ball and Jenkins specifically.

However without a good pass rush we know what happens to them in man coverage. Ugh.

Well that's when it comes down to coaching.

Does Mike Jenkins have a learning disability or isn't he being coached properly? He shouldn't look so lost in zone coverage.

I don't count Ball. He sucks in any scheme.

Pass rush better get better quickly if they decide to use more man coverage.

I have no confidence in any players of the Dallas secondary. To me, they are replaceable. Hopefully, after next season. I will be eating a big ol' plate of crow. I think Ryan can make some players in Dallas now better. He just has a lot of work to do with the secondary and the front 7 on D that dumbass Jerry "loves" so much.
