PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said his brother, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, will undergo a lap-band procedure.

Rex Ryan underwent a similar procedure in March 2010. Rex Ryan did it to help him fight against obesity.

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday morning Rob Ryan is currently undergoing the preparations for the lap-band procedure and is at his Valley Ranch office every day. The procedure is not because of any life-threatening situation and it's being described as health related.

Rob Ryan was not available for comment.

Rex Ryan did the procedure in part to help him get a head coaching job. Ryan blamed his weight for not getting a head coaching spot with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.

"I think I was too fat," Ryan said to the Associated Press in December 2010.

Rob Ryan has a goal of trying to become a head coach but he didn't have any job interviews this offseason.

The lap-band procedure involves a plastic band being inserted that encircles a patient's stomach, effectively shrinking it and curbing the appetite.

I guess we won't be able to call him fat Rob anymore.

A lazy way to lose weight I guess.

I doubt it's a cosmetic choice.

He's likely at a spot where if he doesn't he'll die in the next 3-5 years.

And probably at a spot where he can't physically handle the type of workout he needs to loose the weight he needs to lose.
