The muzzling of new Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan apparently applies only to media outlets from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

On orders from head coach Jason Garrett, Ryan has politely turned down interview requests from D-FW media while at the Senior Bowl. Ryan did speak to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle for a piece on the 3-4 defense.

"If you're going to play a 3-4 and don't have outside linebackers, you don't have a defense,'' Ryan told the newspaper. "It starts with them.''

Ryan is familiar with San Francisco-area media. He served as Oakland's defensive coordinator from 2004-08.

To put that into the context of the Cowboys, Anthony Spencer needs to improve to help out Pro Bowl outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

I called out Spencer in the pre season said he really isn't what everyone puts him out to be and got blasted for it.

I still don't think he will be on Ware's level.

I don't really mind Spencer but I'd hate to see us lose him for nothing. If the staff doesn't believe in him (and I haven't heard either way on this) they should trade him and see what the Butler can do.

Spencer is bound to have a better year since it's a contract year but will it be actual improvement or him giving max effort for a new contract?

I'm not ready to give up on him. But I want to bring in some competition.

Not many are on that level. You're looking for someone that can beat 1 on 1 blocking, in turn taking some of the attention away from Ware.

Spencer has had his moments, but he needs to become consistent on the other side. He's been less than spectacular.

Good question.

We won't know if it was Ryan's influence or the paycheck motivation.

He had 3 sacks going into the finale against Philly's backups.

Absolutely pathetic. I don't care how well he defends the run. You can't run a 3-4 defense without rush threats on both sides of the line.

Another reason I think Ratliff should slide to DE on his side. He will greatly benefit from the attention paid to Ratliff.

Sure, light a fire under his ass he needs it.

I still say draft a guy like Akeem Ayers or Aldon Smith to push him.

NO we already have a plodding pass-rusher opposite Ware.

YES

I like Aldon Smith too so I won't be upset if that's the pick.

There's about nine players I like at our pick so I'm easy.

As far as Ayers I don't think he would be a bad choice at nine, it's just my own personal opinion about him.

Apparently you like 26 players at our pick, because Akeem Ayers is about the 26th overall pick.

And that's your problem right there. Who IS on Ware's level? Aside from Clay Matthews, but steroids and Dom Capers had a hand in that. Spencer does not need to be on Ware's level to be effective for the Cowboys. does he need to be better? Sure, but it seems like people like you afflicted with this Madden Mentality---the "educated", are of the opinion that if Spencer is not on Ware's level, then he sucks.

A parting shot: Is Ayers on Ware's level?

Can't argue with that. Nobody's on Ware's level. Including Matthews. He needs to do it year in and year out before he can compare.

But, when you have a guy like Ware on one side demanding all the attention, it's not uncommon for a lesser but still quality pass rusher on the other side to take advantage of it and put up big numbers.

Spencer had that working for him all year. He had 3 sacks in the first 15 games. That can't happen.

Who's Anthony Spencer?

Oh yeah, the ghost wearing #93 last season. Definately bring in some competition. Get something to light a fire under his underachieving ass.

No, Laz, Ayers isn't on Ware's level.. Get that guy some roids and Capers. Then he will be.
