Rob Ryan hasn't officially taken charge of the Cowboys defense yet, but his impending hire has already put changes in motion.
Linebackers coach Reggie Herring has now been granted permission to speak to the Houston Texans. Former Cowboys coach Wade Phillips inquired about Herring after he was hired by the Texans. The Cowboys intially said no because they wanted, in part, to give their new defensive coordinator the ability to put together his staff.
Allowing Herring to talk to the Texans is a clear indication that Ryan has someone in mind to coach linebackers. He also has an opening to fill on the defensive line, one that was created when Paul Pasqualoni left to coach the University of Connecticut.
When will the Cowboys make the hire official? Probably not today. Ryan isn't even at Valley Ranch. Since it is a holiday, the announcement will likely come Tuesday at the earliest.
