Richie Incognito owns a Ferrari, and he took a baseball bat to it while it was parked in his front yard.

Sadly, we're getting to the point with Incognito where that story isn't even really all that surprising.

Incognito, the Dolphins guard who was suspended from the team and was blasted in Ted Wells' report for his harassment of teammate Jonathan Martin, has a history of erratic behavior. We've seen that in the Wells Report from the sudden shifts in tone of his text conversations with Martin. His Twitter feed, which is full of sudden rants and quick backtracking, has been another window. For example, he seemed to fire his agents on Twitter and then shortly after he tweeted that he would never fire them. Perhaps it's all an inside joke, but it's strange to see.

TMZ reported that Incognito bashed his Ferrari. The car was in front of his house, didn't appear to be parked in a driveway, and had plenty of dents in the hood. TMZ published a photo of a bat right next to the car. TMZ talked to Scottsdale Police Department, who said Incognito told them he was the one who hit the car with the bat. What would possess someone to damage his own expensive sports car?

Incognito is dealing with a lot. He was publicly shredded over the Martin issue. He's still in his playing prime at age 30, a top-end offensive guard, but is a free agent and even if the NFL doesn't suspend him, it's far from a guarantee that any team would want to sign him after everything that has happened.

Incognito's chances of latching on again might have rested on him having a nice, quiet offseason and doing the best he could to put the Martin mess behind him. Knocking around his Ferrari with a bat isn't exactly nice and quiet.

I'd still sign him, but keep him on a short leash. He's no worse than Tank Johnson, TO, and certainly not Pacman.

Yep, and looks like he was probably drunk too.

He also broke the bat.

Reminds me of the time I had a Ferrari and I smashed it with a hammer.

Did it to a bunch of my matchbox cars, actually. You know, to make it look like they got in car accidents.

Ah, to be 9 again.

No man would bash his own Ferrari. Probably covering for a friend he got into a disagreement with.

Richie Incognito is being held on an involuntary psychiatric hold ... but HE was the one who initially wanted to get help ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Sources tell us ... Richie was hanging out with a friend last night -- when they started drinking and talking about all of the drama in Richie's life ... including why he smashed up his Ferrari with a baseball bat.

Sources tell us ... Richie has been on the verge of a breakdown from all of the stress connected to the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal AND his parents' divorce.

We're told Richie was aware of his situation -- and was wrestling with the idea of seeking psychiatric help for a while ... but was scared because of the frightening "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" imagery connected to a psych ward.

We're told Richie got very emotional during the conversation with his friend Thursday night ... and eventually both men decided Incognito should seek immediate psychological help.

Problem was ... our sources tell us they realized they were too drunk to drive -- so they called police to ask for a ride to the psychiatric facility.

Our sources tell us Richie initially checked himself in to the facility ... but shortly after he arrived, he freaked out and wanted to leave.

That's when multiple people sprang into action and secured an involuntary commitment order.

The involuntary commitment is on a ticking clock ... and it's unclear if his family will move to get a conservatorship after the involuntary commitment runs its course.
