Rib, lung injuries won't keep Romo down

IRVING -- Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said there's no reason to think quarterback Tony Romo will miss Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins, despite a rib fracture and a punctured lung suffered Sunday in San Francisco.
The punctured lung, found in a CT scan Monday, is not unusual with an injury like a fractured rib, Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said.
"I would not think there's any reason to think he won't be able to play Monday," Garrett said. "We're certainly hopeful."
Romo would not be the first Cowboys quarterback to play with a collapsed lung. Don Meredith did on Nov. 13, 1966, throwing for 406 yards in a 31-30 win at Washington.
The Cowboys should finally get to see cornerback Terence Newman in action. Out since Aug. 3 with a groin injury, Newman said he would start against the Redskins.
Running back Felix Jones (dislocated shoulder), receiver Dez Bryant (thigh bruise) and tight end Jason Witten (sore ribs) are also on track to play in the Cowboys' home opener.
Receiver Miles Austin aggravated a hamstring injury Sunday and is not expected to play against Washington. He might also miss the following game.
Cornerback Orlando Scandrick (ankle) will miss his second game in a row and center Phil Costa (knee) might miss Monday's game.
Didn't like it
Jason Garrett said he didn't like the run play he called for Miles Austin at the end of regulation against the 49ers. Austin wound up short of the first down, and he aggravated a hamstring injury. He also fumbled, although the ball was recovered by Doug Free.
"Conceptually, it was a good idea for that situation," Garrett said. "We wanted to run the ball there. We'd run similar-type runs from that three-wide receiver set in the drive, so we wanted to do something different."
Garrett said the Cowboys didn't want to lose ground on the down, so they opted for a run.
"We wanted to kick the field goal," Garrett said. "In hindsight, I would've run a different play."
Emergency QB
Tashard Choice was an option at quarterback if the Cowboys had lost both Tony Romo and Jon Kitna to injury Sunday.
"We have a couple of other guys we have considered and worked a little bit," Jason Garrett said, adding the Cowboys are comfortable keeping only two quarterbacks active on game day.
"Percentages tell you over the last 15 or 20 years that the number of times two healthy quarterbacks going into a game, both guys get hurt and a third guy had to play, the percentages aren't very high," Garrett said.
Few reserves
The Cowboys had only seven linemen active for the game against the 49ers. Kevin Kowalski was the reserve interior lineman, and Jermey Parnell was the reserve tackle.
So when center Phil Costa went out with a knee injury and Kowalski came in, there would have been no true replacement if Kowalski or one of the guards had been hurt.
"Fortunately, I had been getting quite a bit of reps at center during the week," Kowalski said. "Not so much at guard.
"So the situation wasn't the worst situation that could have happened to me, and I felt I was pretty prepared and the coaches helped me be prepared for the moment."
Briefly
The Cowboys will take Wednesday off and move their schedule back a day, giving themselves an extra rehab day before starting their practice routine.
Cornerback Mike Jenkins (neck, knee) is "about 80 percent" healthy.
