Rex Ryan calls it escapability. It's a football word used to describe a player's knack for escaping pressure. According to the New York Jets head coach, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo possesses this quality.
Romo's vision and ability to elude defensive pressure are two skills that Ryan is preparing his team for heading into Sunday night's season opener with the Cowboys.
"A lot of guys can only see half the field, he's got great vision," Ryan recently said on New York's 1050 WEPN-AM. "And he can make all the throws. He's certainly a great talent."
Ryan also noted that Cowboys running back Felix Jones is "legitimate" and tight end Jason Witten is "right up there with the best tight ends in football."
The confident head coach, who is known for making bulletin board material for upcoming opponents, was reserved during the interview.
He spoke graciously about the challenge of facing his twin brother Rob Ryan, the Cowboys' defensive coordinator. The Jets head coach was asked if he had an advantage over his brother because of his familiarity with Rob's defensive style, his response: "[Rob] does things a little differently. His experience is probably a little different than me. I think everybody assumes we're the same, but it's not true."
Before the interview was over, he added one more thought about the Week 1 game against the visiting Cowboys.
"You're going against one of the best offenses in football and one of the most talented defenses in football, so we're going to have our work cut out for us," Rex said. "But I think we'll be up to the task."
