Report: Rumored Cowboys head coaching candidate Bill Cowher not on Jerry Jones' shortlist

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has been doing a better-than-expected job since he took over for Wade Phillips in Week 10. While wins over Indianapolis, Detroit, and the New York Giants has done wonders for his chances of retaining the position at the end of the season, it hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out big name candidates to fill the potential opening.

One of those names is former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. While Cowboys fans may have dreams of Cowher prowling the sidelines on Sunday, he apparently isn't on Jerry Jones' short list of possible candidates.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported earlier today, through a source, that while Cowher has interest in coming back in 2011, he won't be doing it as a member of the Dallas Cowboys' staff.

"A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Cowher is not, and will not be, a candidate to coach the Cowboys," Florio said. "There has been little if any buzz connecting Cowher to Dallas, despite the wishes of some of the team's fans. The lack of interest in Cowher confirms that, despite the team's recent struggles, owner Jerry Jones is not yet ready to cede some or all of his power to a head coach, like he did in 2003 when bringing in Bill Parcells."

Considering the way the Cowboys are responding to Jason Garrett, there may not even be a need to send out a search party to find a new head coach.

What do you make of the news that Cowher isn't on Jerry's list of potential candidates?

This is why this organization will continue to struggle.

Get used to having average seasons with no Super Bowl as long as Jerry is GM.

A lot of fans don't realize he's the main reason for this franchise's epic failure.

I hope he ends up bankrupt with this team and he's forced to sell.

Now, Cowher is my first choice and I believe we need that kind of coach to help Jerry, but we'll be stuck with a coach who's hands are tied.

I like JG too, but we might not see JG's full potential as a head coach, because he's probably too chicken shit to stand up to Jerry.

I wouldn't get too excited about next year.

I'm actually glad Cowher isn't being considered.

He's been propped up to legendary status, and I don't think it's deserved.

Yeah, I prefer Cowher, but my point is we won't get any coach that will have any power.

Jerry is your GM and head coach. We'll never win another Super Bowl with this clown as our GM.

Put it in bold lettering all over this board if you want, we won't win another Super Bowl with Jerry as our GM.

I'm not going to argue that. I'm off the Jerry bandwagon, but I still don't think he's as bad as you, sbk, and many others make him out to be.

I think Jerry is a great businessman, but he isn't a good GM.

He's killing this franchise as our GM. He can at least admit he needs help, and hire someone who can help him.

Too bad his big ego is in the way.

He's stubborn, and he wants to win "his way."

Getting credit is important to him.

I agree we're handicapped as a franchise with him in charge.

But I still don't and wouldn't want Cowher as our next coach.

I feel different about Cowher, but we at least need someone like him.

I like JG, but I don't think he has enough to get us there. Now, he's an upgrade from Wade that's for damn sure.

Care to elaborate?

What I mean is we won't be able to see JG's full potential as a head coach here.

Why? Jerry Jones, that's why. I hate to be negative but it's true.

Now, if Jerry steps back a bit, then I can see JG doing some great things here. He's too raw right now for Jerry to trust him.

I'm with Midswat. I don't want Cowher here either. And I think you are wrong about Garrett. Garrett is anything but chicken shit. He'd tell Jones to take a flying fuck and leave. Garrett is youg, arrogant, and ambitious---not a bad thing to have in an HC, especially with an owner like Jones. Garrett's going to to be coaching somewhere. Cosidering as to what he has done with the Cowboys has not gone unnoticed and is one of the most talked about stories in the NFL; and it's even more amazing as to how he is doing it with his star QB on the shelf. This is leverage for Garrett. The Panthers, Vikings, 49ers, Broncos, possibly the Chargers, Texans, possibly Titans, and the Bengals...will be looking for a new HC. I'm certain that Garrett is on the short list for many of those teams. People take notice of a guy that is possibly the enxt Sean Payton, whether warranted or not.

Whew!!! Thank god I don't have to take next season off. LOL.

Jerry Jones, while I can't stand the GM part of him. He has made some good decisions. And Bad. He can make up a lot of ground if he really concentrates on the O-line next season and defense. No more "projects" though. And get some coaches in here with some fire.

I truly wish Jones would hang up the GM name. Hire a real GM. But, that is not going to happen. So, it is what it is. Cowher here would be a fucking joke. I can't stand the man and I hold grudges. I don't care if players have forgotten about rivals, loyalty. I never will. Guess I am too old school for the new NFL.

You go first, Mr. Messageboard GM. Mr. Fantasy Football Owner. Mr. Highlight Reel Scout. Mr. Couch Coach. Mr. Armchair QB.

I forgot more about the game than Jerry will ever know.

And certainly more than some moron talking about how you only rush 3 in a 3-4.

I dont want Cowher here either. Have never thought as much about his HC skills as some do.

I still think if he comes back, its mainly for money. And we've been down that road.

At least Parcells did change the way the organization was run and did make a big impact on the talent level, because he was a good football personnel person. Cowher is not.
