Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has been doing a better-than-expected job since he took over for Wade Phillips in Week 10. While wins over Indianapolis, Detroit, and the New York Giants has done wonders for his chances of retaining the position at the end of the season, it hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out big name candidates to fill the potential opening.
One of those names is former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. While Cowboys fans may have dreams of Cowher prowling the sidelines on Sunday, he apparently isn't on Jerry Jones' short list of possible candidates.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported earlier today, through a source, that while Cowher has interest in coming back in 2011, he won't be doing it as a member of the Dallas Cowboys' staff.
"A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Cowher is not, and will not be, a candidate to coach the Cowboys," Florio said. "There has been little if any buzz connecting Cowher to Dallas, despite the wishes of some of the team's fans. The lack of interest in Cowher confirms that, despite the team's recent struggles, owner Jerry Jones is not yet ready to cede some or all of his power to a head coach, like he did in 2003 when bringing in Bill Parcells."
Considering the way the Cowboys are responding to Jason Garrett, there may not even be a need to send out a search party to find a new head coach.
What do you make of the news that Cowher isn't on Jerry's list of potential candidates?
