NFL, Peyton Manning | Comments

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has missed this entire season while recovering from neck surgery. Much of the discussion has centered around if he should return at the end of this year — if available — and if the team should consider drafting a top QB in the draft to groom under Manning in his final years. According to a report from Chris Myers of Fox Sports tweeted by Ben Maller of Fox Sports Radio, Myers feels there there is “better than 50% chance he retires.”

In Manning’s absence, Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter, and Dan Orlovsky have combined to lead the Colts to a 0-11 record, likely sufficient to earn the team the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The projected top pick in that draft is Stanford QB Andrew Luck.

Since being drafted first overall by the Colts in the 1998 draft, Peyton Manning has thrown for 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns and been to eleven Pro Bowls.

Unless there's something to his health that nobody's talking about, there's a better than 99% chance I don't see that happening...

I don't see him retiring.

Of course, I didn't think he'd miss this whole year, either.

I'll be pissed if he doesn't break more of Favruhs records though.

Think about it. Is it worth the risk to just play football?

I mean Manning's one hard hit away from being in a wheel chair.

The spine and neck are nothing to mess with. Didn't Moose Johnston retire from this type of injury?

The idiots on the fan here this morning who can not come up with anything worth listening to did a whole morning show on how dallas would be better with an old injured peyton manning than tony romo.

The crap they come up with is ridiculous. The team is on a run and in the middle of the best part of the season and this is what we get from the teams official station. Terrible. I guess this is what you get from a jets and redskins fan in this market though.

Romo's been playing well lately I have no complaints.

As far as Manning, he's done this injury is serious.

I'm gonna Hos this thread up for a second cuz I have worked directly with people who treated him prior to his last-ditch effort trip to Europe, and apparently he has little arm strength left. The fused bones will heal fine, but the nerve damage might be irreparable. That was a few months ago, so I am not sure how his rehab has come along since then, but the issue has always been this nerve damage that has robbed him of arm strength.

That's the scary part, amigo.

Shefter was saying today his best guess is they will try to get him to pass a physical and then trade him before the draft.

I can't believe that stupid ass station.

They have Redskin Fan and a NY Jet Fan as morning hosts on a Dallas Cowboy radio station (in Dallas) and they can't figure why their ratings suck ?!?!?

I can't wait til they get the axe...

Irvin as well.

Why would they want to do that? Luck is not a sure thing.

Manning's been around since 1998, he's getting old and he has a major injury issue. They probably would feel like its time to move on.

At this point even without Luck having played a down, his longterm upside is far greater than Manning's.

There's also the possibility that Manning might force a trade or release, because there's already grumblings that he is pushing ownership to NOT draft Luck.

If Indy could get even a mid-level draft pick for Manning, AND draft Luck, that'd be a major coup.

Moose retired because of neck problems, yeah. But the comparison stops there. A FB smashes head first into the line over and over for 3 hours. A QB might take a shot to the head a couple times a year, especially with how they protect QBs.

Still, all it takes is one wrong hit to be eating soup through a straw. For anybody, really. But even moreso with preexisting neck problems. I'd seriously consider retirement if I was him. He's won a superbowl and is a lock for the HOF. Hang em up while you can still walk.

I don't think the neck is his exact issue. If his cervical vertebrae were unstable and there was a chance that displacement could lead to permanent paralysis (as was the case with Irvin and Moose), than it would make sense. Irvin herniated a disc and then it was found that he had an anatomical defect (narrowed spinal canal) that would make him susceptible to more serious injury. From what I understand, Peyton's disc issue and neck are completely stabilized, but he has on-going nerve damage that is causing arm weakness and minor immobility. So he scrambled to Scandinavia for stem cell treatment after being told that he'd have to give it time to see what happens here state-side.

If he's done, it's gonna be because he throws like a girl (or how I'd imagine Theebs throws) now.
