Cutting the hours we work each week to 30 instead of 40 would improve our wellbeing, our family life, friendships and communities, they say.

Combined with a range of new career breaks, it could also lower carbon emissions, it was argued.

The claims are made in new book by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), in which experts say that aiming for a 30-hour week could be possible through gradual changes to the labour market.

Companies should be encouraged to give workers more time off instead of pay rises, while young people starting out in the job market could work a four-day week, as has happened in the Netherlands, it notes.

Following the lead of Belgium, the Government should give all workers a right to request shorter hours and increase the minimum wage, it says.

Anna Coote, head of social policy at the NEF, an independent think-tank, said: "It's time to make 'part-time' the new 'full-time'.

"We must rethink the way we divide up our hours between paid and unpaid activities, and make sure everyone has a fair share of free time."

Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have shown it is possible to make changes like these without weakening their economies, the books claims.

It adds: "Time spent providing unpaid care constitutes an important civic contribution that is often unrecognised.

"A shorter working week would both ease the pressure on carers, most of whom are women, and enable their responsibilities to be more widely shared with men. It could therefore help tackle the entrenched domestic bases of gender inequalities."

Tim Jackson, professor of sustainable development at the University of Surrey, Robert Skidelsky, emeritus professor of political economy at Warwick University, and Juliet Schor, professor in the sociology department, Boston College, are among the book contributors.

Ms Coote said: "We all know the saying 'time is money', but it is much more precious than that.

"Inequalities between rich and poor are widening. This scandal masks another inequality - between those who have plenty of control over their time, and those who don't.

"Time poverty and money poverty often go hand in hand."

"Having too little time to call our own can seriously damage our health and wellbeing, our family life, friendships and communities.

"No one should be made to work long and unsocial hours to make ends meet. Low pay and long-hours working must be tackled at the same time."

I'd bet that there is a huge portion of people who only do 30 hours of work in their 40 day weeks anyways.

What the fuck are you talking about now?

Sorry I'd rather have 3 days off per week instead of 2. You're such a bad ass for not wanting that. You showed everyone in this thread!

I could work 2 days a week if I wanted. A man works while he is able because he might not be so lucky in the future.

The idea that you would magically keep your style of living is a joke and not really worth responding too.

Getting your hours cut back would fucking suck. If you are fine living on four days pay you should do that on your own, save the fifth and maybe you can figure a way to work 3 days a week and get paid like 4.

Edit: and what I was talking about is you could have a 4 day work week right now, find a job with flexible hours, and take 20% less pay and work 4 days a week.

Thanks pops.

Maybe I should cut down trees 7 days a week like you do.

The work day itself wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the bullshit traffic that smothers each side of it.

I've had to rotate around the city for the last few months and some of my drives have been upwards of an hour. 9 to 5 becomes 8 to 6.

Some of my hours have been really shitty like 5 am starts. Sucks to be there that early but you only drive for 15 minutes and when you get off at like 1 or 2, there's no traffic and you're home with the whole afternoon to yourself.

I don't necessarily think 30 hour work weeks would be any less productive. People fucking waste hours on end and in some workplaces much of the day is waiting on someone else to get something done so you can move on with your task.

I'd rather work four 10s to get that 3rd weekend day. Who actually wants to only get 75% of their income?

So in a 6 hour day you can get done as much as an eight hour day, but a 10 hour day is more productive than the 8 hour day?

Amazingly, pay follows production, so let's hope so.

This article is full of shit, but this isn't. Because of my commute I'm not starting work until after 10 and not leaving much before 7 and sometimes later.

With the way things are now, there's really no reason for many to have to show up at some office to do what he or she can do at home. It would save the employee in commuting costs and daily food, if bringing lunch isn't always easy and it'd save the company on office space it doesn't need.

The office environment is incredibly distracting as well. I work a thousand times better and more efficient when I'm in the quiet of my own home.

This is a feel good story about a lot of employers are now dropping folks to 29 hours so they don't have to give them insurance. 1 hour sounds better than 11 right?

That's how much I take home anyways after taxes.

I'm sure you suckers who were tricked into marrying and having kids have it differently, but still...
