Redskins see significant difference in Jason Garrett-coached Cowboys; McNabb: 'They are playing a lot harder'

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

Wade Phillips coached the Dallas Cowboys in the opening-night loss at Washington. Jason Garrett is the interim head coach for Sunday's re-match at Cowboys Stadium.

The coaching change has made a difference in the Cowboys, two members of the Redskins said this week.

``You take a look at their won-loss record,'' Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said during a conference calls. ``They're 3-2 (with Garrett), and the two games they lost -- New Orleans and the Eagles -- they had a chance to win. They're averaging 33 points a game in those five games. Played extremely well.

``I've got a lot of respect for Jason Garrett. I've had a chance to watch him through the years both as a player and as a coach and a guy I really think handles himself in a professional way. Very smart guy, and I think he'll do a great job.''

Donovan McNabb, whose status as starting quarterback is in doubt, told Washington reporters that the Cowboys have given better efforts for Garrett.

``They are playing a lot harder,'' McNabb said. ``Offensively and defensively, they, obviously stepped up to the challenge after Wade was fired, and guys have understood the circumstances.''
