Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman was scheduled to interview for the team's head coaching position Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., according to John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance.

"That was our knowledge as of last night," Wooten said.

Before making an official hire, the Cowboys must satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires organizations to interview at least one minority candidate when they have a head coaching vacancy. Sherman, who is black, has spent 22 years in the NFL as an assistant and arrived in Dallas before the 2007 season.

It's expected that Jason Garrett, the team's acting head coach since Nov. 8, will remain in the position and have the interim tag removed.

Wooten said he believed owner and general manager Jerry Jones did his due diligence by considering Sherman for the opening.

"Ray Sherman has been a coordinator in this league," Wooten said. "And he's been successful as a coach in this league. He's certainly aware of the needs of the Cowboys. I think he's an outstanding candidate."

Cowboys WR coach Ray Sherman: "I had a very good interview''

David Moore / Reporter

Owner Jerry Jones has completed his interview with receivers coach Ray Sherman, clearing the one procedural hurdle that must take place before he can name Jason Garrett as the Cowboys head coach.

Sherman, dressed in a suit and carrying a brief case, emerged from the owner's office shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon.

"I had a very good interview,'' Sherman said. "It lasted about three hours.''

Sherman then excused himself to return to his office at Valley Ranch.

The meeting satisfies the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires every club interview at least one minority candidate for a head coaching vacancy.

Jones said last week that he intended to interview more than one minority candidate for the position. While he is under no obligation to do that, there are indications he might try to conduct another interview this afternoon. There is no confirmation on who that candidate would be.

All is moving quickly to Garrett's inevitable hiring. The question is, will Sherman want to stay and be part of the staff?

Interesting. I wonder what "indications" that might be.

Surely there would be some noteworthy indication of any potential candidate interviewing.

Losing Sherman would hurt. I credit him with Austins development, and I think he'd do wonders for a young Dez Bryant.

I'd hate to lose Sherman, he's really good with these receivers.

lol it's funny that the only people we've interviewed are both black. I guess interviewing one more is going to convince everyone that Jerry really has the best interest of minorities at heart as opposed to interviewing just one.
