Fresh off his third consecutive Pro Bowl, nose tackle Jay Ratliff hasn't met Rob Ryan yet but is excited about the defensive coordinator's track record.

"Asking around, everyone says we're going to love him," Ratliff said. "He's a fiery guy. He's fun, has a great personality. And as a defensive player with the coaches we have, that's what we want. That's what we're looking for. That's our comfort zone.

"I think that was a great move bringing him in. The players say he's just an aggressive-style coach and as long as we have an aggressive coach and we're playing aggressive, I think defensively we'll be good."

Ryan will replace new UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni, who served as interim defensive coordinator for eight games and also coach Ratliff's defensive line in 2010.

"Coach P is a guy that we all respect, we all love, and he has that intensity that we all talk about," Ratliff said. "You're going to play your best for him no matter what."

Now it's Ryan's turn to lead Ratliff's unit.

Phillips defense was suppose to be aggressive also with it's so-called unique 3-4 defense where the lineman play a lot of 1-gap.

And we know where that got us.

However there's no doubt in my mind that next year's product will be much better than this year's... But it almost has to be.

All Phillips did though was have the players rush straight up. No stunting. No attempts at creating confusion. So basically if you have a good majority of sucky players in the front 7, and their rush is getting stone-walled. End game.

Hopefully Ryan will be able to mask some deficiences and we could draft some better players.

Phillips' scheme allows the linemen to be more aggressive. But the back seven is about as conservative as any 3-4 I've ever seen.

While the linemen in Ryan's scheme are responsible for two gaps, he'll give you a ton of looks, the LBs are moving around, linemen standing up, multiple DBs, half the time blitzing. That's a true attack defense.

We'll be better on defense this year if only because of the preparation. Without a single personnel upgrade. Just going through a real camp and preseason will make these players better.

Good point about the conservative play of the back 7.

You would think that conservative play would have cut down on the number of 20+ yard pass plays given up (4th from the bottom in the league) and the number of 40+ yard pass plays given up (2nd from the bottom). Those numbers are horrible to begin with... But made even more so because of the supposed conservative nature of the pass defense.
