By Calvin Watkins

After the first week of the postseason we have some random thoughts on it means for the Cowboys.

1. There are reports that former Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano has some interest in returning to the Cowboys as an offensive line coach. Hudson Houck still has that job, and while his contract will end soon, he hasn't been told he will not be back. Sparano was a solid and popular coach when he was in Dallas. The issue is whether or not Sparano doesn't mind not calling plays. I don't see Jason Garrett giving up those duties to Sparano. I'm also not sure if Sparano wants to return as the offensive line/running game coordinator after spending a couple of seasons as head coach. Money is a factor if Jerry Jones can pay Houck a $1 million a season to coach the line, there's no telling what he pay Sparano to return.

2. Tom Ciskowski, the Cowboys assistant director of player personnel, interviewed with the Indianapolis Colts over the weekend for the vacant general manager's job. If Ciskowski gets the gig, his replacement most likely will come from within. Jerry Jones could promote any number of people from Chris Hall, college scouting coordinator, Drew Fabianich, national scout, Judd Garrett, director of pro scouting, and Will McClay, director of football research to replace Ciskowski.

3. It's funny how Tony Romo gets so much criticism for not winning any big games, and come to find out Matt Ryan is 0-3 in the postseason, and while Eli Manning has won a Super Bowl, just picked up his first home playoff win on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. Romo has at least one playoff win, coming in 2009 vs. Philadelphia. Romo has won some big games, but when you look back on the Cowboys season, especially the last month, you can't blame Romo for the issues.

4. Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Chris Harris finished with five tackles on Sunday in the AFC wild card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harris was the fifth cornerback in the dime package the Broncos employed against the Steelers. We talk about Harris today because several teams, including the Cowboys, passed up on drafting or signing him. Harris didn't have a draftable grade coming out of Kansas and some thought he was more of a free safety. But he started four regular season games for the Broncos with six pass breakups and one interception. But there was Harris playing very physical on Sunday which included a hard hit on Steelers wideout Mike Wallace. Think the Cowboys could have used a physical corner in the secondary?

5. You can't replace everybody on the team, and while the Cowboys made numerous changes before the 2011 season, expect some new faces in 2012 again. The offensive line, linebacker corps and secondary could get two new starters each. The only sure thing is quarterback, running back, tight end and wide receiver.

me too.

I was ok with garrett but when fox started getting interviews I really wanted him here. I actually thought he wouldnt get a head coaching job and would maybe come run our defense since him and garrett were in ny together.

that was a pipe dream.

Fox, Gruden, and Harbaugh should have all been interviewed. It's funny how "Garrett just needs full offseason" for a team he's been with over 5 years now, but Fox and Harbaugh were A-ok rolling into worse situations and coaching through it. Fox even had to change his entire offensive playbook mid-season to milk some wins out of Tebow.

Lets just keep cutting players though to get "Garrett guys" in the locker room. Sounds brilliant.

It's true though...those guys took right off, but Garrett could not do the same thing. Hell, Fox is playing half a ****** at QB and winning.

Also, Wade changed an entire scheme and lost his best defensive player, but still outclassed Rob Ryan.

Wade has alot of talent on defense in Houston, Williams was playing well but they have alot of good young players there. They also spent some big $$$ to get daniel Manning and Jonathan Joseph. They also played a scheule with alot of poor offensive football teams.

San Fran isnt devoid of talent either (especially defensive, and on the OL). I still think they look like a 1 yr wonder team though and wont be surprised if they just get pasted by New Orleans. They won alot of close games this year.

Denver didnt exactly "take off". They won a bad division (backed in) and then beat a vastly overrated Stealer team that was missing their best RB.

Ryan brought in Elam and Coleman...if he wanted Manning there is no doubt they could have worked a similiar deal to what he got in Houston.

Harbaugh changed the entire culture of the 49ers...quite a few of those players were with the 6-10 team from a year ago. But hey...next year they will suck and stuff.

It's weird that now the Steelers are overrated considering quite a few pundits were saying that they were a team no one would want to play. Fox changed that from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in a short offseason and made it work too. But bad division, etc.

You play who they put in front of you. Harbaugh and Fox are in the second round of the playoffs with no franchise QB. Neither squad has HOF players like Witten and Ware on it, either. Neither one had the luxury of having their franchise QB (which neither has) organizing team OTAs because the lockout was on.

I can only vouch for one person here that wanted John Fox, and that was Midswat.

It makes you wonder how different things may have been, but the main problem still exists, Jerruh.

So what it of made a difference having Fox here?

People have been expecting the 49ers to take the next step in a weak division for years now, and that's not because they're completely devoid of talent and have gone 5-11 the past three seasons. Aside from not having a franchise QB they are alot like the team Jason Garrett took over this season, talent-wise.

John Harbaugh managed to get that squad the 2 seed in a shitty division. Jason Garrett managed to get his team (with a franchise QB) to finish third in a shitty division.

This would be a much more comfy thread for dbair at CZ because every moderator and admin would have paid a visit by now to edit/delete carp's replies, and then talk about how great that Parcells/Quincy example is.

Great post, dbair. It has taken Hos longer to paint me with a pearl necklace then it has for you to end threads like this with the facts. It's a shame that some fans just don't understand the game of football. Virginia McCaskey wasn't out there calling plays or blocking for Walter Payton. I didn't need John Fox to become an all-star DB on my powderpuff football team. Fuck that guy. We're lucky to have our GM and HC here in Dallas. I love you.
