Most everyone is operating under the assumption that once a new CBA is worked out, a salary cap will be back in place in 2011.

That would mean we could throw out the rules that a player needs six years of service before being eligible for unrestricted free agency, and the rookie contract most guys signed will truly be binding. In that event, the Cowboys will have a number of key contributors due to hit the open market a year from now.

Obviously the team has a lot of holes to fill now, and they'll try to plug a lot of them in the draft next month, along with free agency, whenever it comes around. But don't rule out the possibility of them selecting players who might not fully win starting jobs until 2012, especially in the middle and later rounds. Even in the first round, if a guy like Von Miller dropped to the Cowboys, the team might be tempted to play him on third downs and pencil him in as Anthony Spencer's replacement for the next year, when Spencer's contract is up.

Among the veterans who would hit unrestricted free agency in 2012 are:

QB: Jon Kitna
RB: Tashard Choice
G: Montrae Holland
TE: Martellus Bennett
LB: Keith Brooking, Bradie James, Anthony Spencer
CB: Orlando Scandrick
K: Kris Brown
P: Mat McBriar

Combine those names with the positions we know need help before this season, and the Cowboys essentially have things to address up and down the roster.

Even with Sean Lee in tow, it would seem the Cowboys have a special need at inside linebacker. Look for that to be a position they address in April.
