Predictability Remains in Jason Garrett’s Play-Calling
http://dallascowboystimes.com/2011/11/predictability-remains-in-jason-garretts-play-calling/
Jonathan Bales

Over the years, I have detailed much of the predictability within Jason Garrett’s play-calling. Everyone here knows about the frequency of strong side dives from “Double Tight Strong,” the lack of efficient playaction passes, the predictable 2nd down play-calling, and so on. I often discuss how the goal of any offensive coordinator is to fool the defense and ultimately exploit a mismatch, and predictability can really kill one’s ability to do that.

One thing I do not discuss as often, however, is how predictability can be useful to an offense. When used properly, an offensive coordinator can take advantage of previous tendencies to garner big plays for his team. Well, I took a look at this idea in a recent article for Advanced NFL Stats. Head over there to take a gander, and feel free to comment there or here.

As it relates to Dallas, Garrett does not seem to take advantage of his tendencies. He has dialed up a deep pass on less than 5% of passes from “Double Tight Strong” over the past 39 games, and only eight (EIGHT!) playaction passes since the start of the 2009 season have come with 1-4 yards to go for a 1st down–a time when defenses are likely anticipating a run. Actually, more playaction passes (11) have come with 20+ yards to go. Garrett is surely leaving a lot of potential yards out there due to an inability to capitalize on specific scenarios which create favorable defensive expectations.

“Double Tight Strong” and other run-oriented formations are specifically good options from which to pass. A playaction look from the formation on 2nd and 1, for example, forces the defense to line up with base or “heavier” personnel, perhaps call a play to stop the run, think the run is coming due to the playaction look, and then potentially get beat deep. . .except Garrett isn’t calling playaction passes from the formation.

The goal of NFL coaches is to maximize the chance of success for their team, and until Garrett abandons the concept that his players are so well-coached and talented that they can execute any play at any time, the Cowboys will continue to lose football games they should be winning.

Garrett isn't the guy, imo. The team is still struggling in key areas that we thought was the fault of Wade Phillips.

I like Garrett's message, but things just don't seem to be registering with the team. I think it has to do with some serious definciencies in the roster.

Kinda makes you wonder.

Why isn't the team getting the message? Is he talking over their retarded heads with his big fancy Ivy League words?

It may be so. We don't need to have all-stars at every position, we have enough talent to be a little more consistent then we have been. But maybe we don't. Maybe it's a combination of the two.

Why do the penalties keep piling up? This team isn't disciplined.

Yeah, we won but we have a lot of issues with this team. The bright spots are on defense and DeMarco Murray on offense.
The rest of the team is inconsistent. We'll end up at .500 or at best 9-7. That still won't get us in the playoffs.

he's trying to plug a square Tony Romo into a round hole. Bring back Sparano!

Romo is doing a little better yardage wise than he was at this point last year. That's it. It's quite disconcerting.

Dude has no touch or rythm. Even when he started getting it going today when we pulled away from the hags, he was going back to old Romo; overthrowing receivers and throwing into sure coverage.

So in other words if we had an all-pro roster we might be able to win even with Garrett?

I don't think Garrett has a clue about utilizing this roster appropriately. His schemes are not suited to the talents of our best players. Romo is not Joe Montana, but he's definitely better than Alex Smith, and you see that guy doing well now with a good coach. Every team in the league has holes and deficiencies, but the good coaches are able to work around them. Garrett is crippled by anything that occurs. I wish he'd just fuck off.

You saw a great example of coaching in the Giants-Patriots game. The Giants are about the 3rd most talented team in the division. But nobody gets more out of his players than Coughlin. They lose players and they don't miss a beat.

I enjoy watching the Giants play because they plug guys in and give teams hell. I wish we were like them, but we aren't.

Jason Garrett...good Head Coach

How so? I see the same issues that we had under Wade. Had tons of penalties at home vs. Seattle in the first half. We were not very prepared at all vs. New England. The receivers still don't know where to line up. What are u seeing that I am missing?

The D is playing well despite injuries so I can see support for Rob, but Garrett has shown virtually no improvement since our 13-3 season.

The o-line is smarter and the team is way less chatty

This also seems like step 1 of a 3 step plan.

1. Purge the roster

Profit Is coming

Garrett has the kind of qualities I like in a Head Coach. Positive, preaches accountability, and remains calm on the sidelines.

The problem may be, that like it was with Wade, the players know they answer to Jerry and not the Head Coach. I hope that isn't the case but to me, it was clearly a problem with Wade. A lot of the same players remain.

Garrett, the playcaller, has been called predictable by at least 2 NFL teams, 2 TV analysts, and countless newspaper writers. The goal line isues have been here as long as Garrett has been calling plays. He has earned his nickname of Tecmo Bowl.
