The Cowboys have a pretty good crop of coaches who could be available to become the new running backs coach.
Skip Peete was released on Monday with one year remaining on his contract. Peete was a good coach who is taking the fall for a run game that finished 31st in the NFL in 2012.
With Peete gone, the Cowboys could look at New York Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn. Lynn has been with the Jets since 2009 and spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the Cowboys. It's unknown if Lynn will be retained when the Jets hire an offensive coordinator. Tony Sparano was let go Monday night.
Ollie Wilson with the San Diego Chargers since 2008 is another potential candidate. Wilson knows the offensive system run by Cowboys coach Jason Garrett because it's similar to the one Norv Turner ran in San Diego.
Buffalo Bills running backs coach Curtis Modkins, with the franchise the last three seasons, could receive some consideration as well.
Wilson and Modkins are in the same situation as Lynn; Just waiting until the new coordinators are hired to determine if the offensive staffs will remain the same. Of course contracts statuses' are a concern as well for some assistant coaches.
The Cowboys could also go to the college ranks to find a new running back coach to work with starter DeMarco Murray and backups Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar.
