IRVING, Texas -- The 15-minute open portion of Friday's practice didn't divulge whether offensive tackle Tyron Smith or cornerback Terence Newman would play Sunday, but both at least seemed a bit more active before the workout started.

Smith did some position drills with a new brace on his hyperextended right knee, then stood off to the side again. He wasn't wearing cleats.

Newman, whom Jerry Jones essentially ruled out a couple days ago, did some conditioning work off to the side with a helmet but no jersey. He went inside as the open portion ended.

Jason Garrett has said he'd need to see Newman practice after the veteran corner missed the entire preseason. Smith doesn't have a hard-and-fast rule, though. Both will travel to New York, he said.

Cornerback Mike Jenkins (hyperextended knee) was back again after practicing on a limited basis Thursday.

Final injury report coming Friday afternoon.

Cowboys injury report: Smith no, Jenkins yes

IRVING -- Cowboys rookie right tackle, Tyron Smith, did some mental reps with the first-team but didn't practice on Friday as he's still recovering from a hyperextended right knee. He is wearing a new knee brace and his status for Sunday's season opener at the New York Jets is uncertain.

Cornerback Mike Jenkins, with his right knee taped, will practice. He also has a hyperextended knee and it appears he will play on Sunday.

Center Phil Costa (knee) also practiced.

Cornerback Terence Newman (groin) did some ball drills before practice. Coach Jason Garrett said Newman will travel with the team but it's still not clear if he'll play. Team owner Jerry Jones ruled Newman out on Wednesday, but over the last two days, the veteran corner has been running at nearly full speed.

Also, tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle) and wide receiver Laurent Robinson (hamstring) did not practice. Robinson was doing rehab work with Miles Austin (hamstring), who did practice.

How much work the players will get was not known.

Tyron Smith will test knee 2moro. "It's looking good as each day goes by," he said.
