The Dallas Morning News Cowboys writer Gerry Fraley chatted with fans and answered questions on Monday. He discussed various topics, including who could be the Cowboys head coach next season.
Here are some highlights:
On bringing back Mike Woicik as strength and conditioning coach:
Fraley: Woicik won't be leaving New England any time soon. I do think you are on to something with the conditioning aspect, but I see a different angle. My contention is this team did not get ready for a season in training camp. Jerry Jones' plan of two weeks in San Antonio, a week of nothing after the Hall of Fame game and two weeks in Oxnard, Calif., was a bad way to prepare a football team.
Also, Jerry's criticisms of the coaching staff after Dez Bryant's ankle injury caused Wade Phillips to pull back on workouts. It was a very soft camp after that. Jerry got what he asked for: no contact and an unprepared team.
On if Jerry Jones can really hold Jason Garrett responsible for the losses to Arizona and New Orleans:
Fraley: The head coach sets a tone for a team. If Wade Phillips had the 1-7 start put upon him, the same standard must hold for Jason Garrett. He puts the players in the positions where they determine the club's fate.
On who will be the Cowboys next head coach:
Fraley: On Saturday morning, I thought Garrett after a sham of a search. The Arizona performance was so bad that I've changed and think it'll be open and someone like NYG DC Perry Fewell could come in and get the job. Or Leslie Frazier, Minnesota's interim head coach. Mike Holmgren is a great name. Like most football guys, he is uncomfortable in a front-office role. I would not rule him out of this search. He's a much more likely candidate for the Cowboys than Gruden or Cowher. The Arizona game reminded Jerry Jones and everyone else with the club that Garrett was part of the 1-7 start, too. ... Don't see Jerry looking at a college coach. he has said that he does not want a coach who has to learn on the job with the cowboys.
On when the Cowboys next head coach will be named:
Fraley: Before the Super Bowl, Jerry will find a way to get maximum exposure for the hire by trotting him out before the assembled national-media masses at the SB.
