Bill Parcells rejoining ESPN for third time
Bill Parcells, the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach, is rejoining ESPN for the third time. This time with a catch. The former head coach of the New York Giants, New York Jets, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys will star in a one-time ESPN SportsCenter special called, Bill Parcells Draft Confidential, ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer confirmed Thursday.
The 90-minute taped special is slated to air the week of the 2011 NFL Draft from April 28-30, which ESPN will cover along with the NFL Network. The show will take TV viewers inside Parcells' perspective on draft strategy based on 30 years of NFL experience as a coach, front office executive and talent evaluator. During the show, he'll go one-on-one with Mike Tirico, play-by-play announcer for ESPN's Monday Night Football.
Parcells says in a statement that he hopes his show gives fans insights on "how difficult it is to draft successfully" on a consistent basis.
"I'm prepared to talk about the players in this year's draft. I know the strengths of the class, and I know the quarterbacks well. None of the quarterbacks are 'can't miss' prospects," says Parcells. "There are certain attributes that some of these guys possess that aren't evident to the naked eye. Some of the attributes will carry them forward to a successful career and some will be prohibitive to that happening."
Seth Markman, ESPN's senior coordinating producer for NFL studio shows, says the network would be interested in hiring the 69-year old Parcells for a full-time TV gig this season if there is a season. But the two sides have not broached the subject yet.
"I'm not going to tell you we wouldn't be interested. We've worked with Bill plenty of times. If he would want to work here again, we would definitely talk about it," Markman says.
The Big Tuna retired and unretired from coaching three times. He left his previous gig as an analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Countdown in late 2007. He then served two years as executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins from 2008-2009. Last season, Parcells consulted for the Dolphins. But his contract is up and he's now effectively a free agent, Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said Thursday.
Parcells previously worked on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown in 2002 after spending the previous season as a guest analyst. He left after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones coaxed him out of retirement. He worked as an analyst for NBC Sports in 1991-992 after his first retirement from coaching,
During his 19 coaching seasons, Parcells won two rings with the Giants in Super Bowls XXI and XXV and led the Patriots to Super Bowl XXXI. He posted a 172-130-1 regular season record and an 11-8 mark in the playoffs.
