Most of the free agency questions rolling into the award-winning mailbag section here at DallasCowboys.com have been about Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and safety Michael Huff.

However, one free agent who may fit an even bigger need that the club should consider signing is Green Bay defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins, who would settle in as a starter at one end of the 3-4 defense. Jenkins doesn't expect to be back with the Packers despite 7.0 sacks last season and 29.0 for his career.

The 6-2, 305-pounder would be ideal on first and second downs, when he has proven himself as a run stuffer and shown the ability to get to the quarterback, but can play in some nickel situations as well.

Chances are he'll cost more than Marcus Spears, who could be the most costly of the Cowboys' three free agent defensive ends. The team wants to bring back at least one member of that trio, which includes Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher.

Jenkins would be a nice addition - much cheaper than Asomugha, and quite possibly more impactful than Huff.

I think it's a good philosophy to have for a team to rarely ever spend significant free agent dollars on players at or over the age of 30.

Of course there are exceptions. When DeMarcus Ware needs a resign at 31 or whatever, you resign DeMarcus Ware. But as a general rule, avoid paying big dollars to older players.

It shows stability within the organization when you see these few teams release pretty good players on the wrong side of 30. It shows the opposite when these other organizations leap at the opportunity to sign these players, imo.

The Packers will get a youngster in there to fill in and play well.

And yes, I realize that I'm for signing this guy if he's available. We aren't a stable franchise, imo. I don't think we have a player good enough to replace Spears from within. The Packers probably do have Jenkins' replacement.

It's not that we're not stable as a franchise, it's more along the lines that the youth well is all dry on the Dline. 30 year old free agent acquisitions should be for stop-gap plug ins until younger players are ready to step up later. We have none of that.

Totally agree. They are able to do that because of the system they have in place courtesy of Dom Capers.

I'm against signing him.

He'd fill an immediate need, but it would likel be a problem contract and lead to dead cap space in the future.
