Osi likely out 2-4 weeks, targeting Dec. 18 vs ‘Skins for return
Osi Umenyiora is expected to miss two to four weeks with an ankle sprain that a source described as “not good.”
The two-time Pro Bowl defensive end is targeting the Dec. 18 game against the Redskins for his return, although there is hope that he could come back “maybe sooner,” according to the source, who is familiar with the situation.
Two weeks would mean Umenyiora would miss the Giants’ games against the Packers (11-0) Sunday and the NFC East-leading Cowboys (7-4) in Dallas the following weekend.
“We’ll take it a week at a time,” the source said.
Umenyiora underwent tests Tuesday night at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan that showed a bad sprain.
When asked if Umenyiora suffered a high ankle sprain, the source responded: “It’s messed up.”
The New York Daily News first reported that the pass rusher could miss more than one game.
Umenyiora suffered the sprain in the second quarter Monday night of the Giants’ 49-24 loss in New Orleans.
Initially, he thought he was fine, and the Giants’ listed his return as “probable.” But he was soon downgraded to out. He watched the second half in sweatpants.
Umenyiora, 30, missed the Giants’ first three games after undergoing knee surgery in August. Despite the late start, he is second on the team with 7.0 sacks, although he has just one in the past four games.
Second-year defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul—who leads the team with 10 1/2 sacks—took Umenyiora’s place when he left the game and figures to start Sunday against Green Bay.
The Giants must get pressure on Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers on Sunday to put a stop to their three-game losing streak. The once-fearsome pass rush has recorded just one sack in the past two weeks and just five in the past four.
The Giants did not record a sack Monday night in their 49-24 loss to the Saints, allowing Drew Brees to carve them up for 363 passing yards.
