IRVING — The Cowboys are in the driver’s seat in the NFC East in large part because Tony Romo is playing the best football of his career.
In the 10 games since he threw three interceptions in the second half of a stunning 34-30 loss to Detroit, Romo has passed for 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions, including eight TDs and no picks in three games this month. For the season, he has a 102.6 passer rating after throwing for 3,895 yards and 29 TDs with only nine interceptions.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett offers three reasons Romo has been so good, followed by Express-News Cowboys beat writer Tom Orsborn’s take.
The vision
Like an All-Star point guard driving down the lane in traffic, Romo uses his outstanding vision to find the open man. “One of his strengths we’ve seen a lot of lately is his ability to move but keep his eyes downfield,” Garrett said. “You see a lot of quarterbacks that can move and run. But he has the ability to keep his eyes up and make plays downfield.”
The attitude
Whether it’s Garrett, quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson or 39-year-old backup Jon Kitna speaking, Romo listens. “One of the reasons we like to coach him so much is he likes to learn,” Garrett said.
The feet
Time and again this season, Romo has slipped away from defenders to make big plays downfield. “He’s very instinctive,” Garrett said. “He has a very good feel for people around him. That’s one of his real strengths.”
Tom’s take
The “Romo coaster” is definitely on the upswing, but the Cowboys’ playoff hopes still hinge squarely on Rob Ryan’s defense. If you want something to worry about, Cowboys fans, focus on whether DeMarcus Ware & Co. can stop the Eagles’ Mike Vick and LeSean McCoy on Christmas Eve and the Giants’ Eli Manning and Brandon Jacobs on New Year’s Day.
