Garrett responds to Cowher saying Cowboys displayed ‘defeatist attitude’ in the desert
Posted on 12/07/2011 by torsborn

Jason Garrett firmly believes the Cowboys are an aggressive team.

But at least one former Super Bowl champion coach disagrees with him.

Bill Cowher, the former Steelers mentor and current CBS analyst, said in a radio interview with SIRIUS, that Garrett showed a “defeatist attitude” in his clock management decisions in the 19-13 overtime loss at Arizona and that he was “totally mystified” by the coach’s decisions.

Garrett responded Wednesday by saying, “If anything we are a very aggressive team in all areas. We will continue to be that way. That’s the way we believe you have to play. I’m not concerned about that one bit.”

Garrett said he decided to let Dan Bailey kick a 49-yard field goal rather than call a timeout with about 25 seconds left in regulation to run a few more playscloser because he had confidence in Bailey and was fearful an extra play or two would result in lost yardage.

Cowher scoffed at that explanation.

“Championship teams don’t think about what they don’t do,” Cowher said. “They think about what they can do.”

Now watch Garrett do a complete 180 the next time we're in this situation and have Romo just throw it up for grabs in the endzone. Then when it's picked off and we lose he'll be able to say, 'that's why I played for the FG last time'.

It seems like whenever he gets severely criticized he goes to the opposite extreme the next time just to prove a point.

Since when is it aggressive to settle for a kick with 25 seconds left and 2 timeouts due to fear of "negative yardage"?

He's about aggressive as an earthworm.

Exactly. And will not care if they lose doing it. Just liike the Lions' game, people thought he should have ran more---even though it was nearly a 50-50 split between running and passing as dbair showed; Garrett then floowls up in New England where he runs three straight run plays in an "effort" to run out the clock with 3:36 left in the game---nevermind that the Patriots had 3 timeouts left, I believe.

He's aggressively stupid. Sitting on 3 points with 3:36 left in the game agaisnt the Patriots IS not aggressive.

I think he's pretty much displayed he's aggressive as a playcaller, but I also think he has let outside criticism dictate decision making in future games.

Its one of the dumbest things I've ever seen done at the end of a game, although it most likely has happened before. We just dont pay attention to all other teams the way we do this one. That said, we should have called timeout and ran another play or two, without question. It was dumb to play for a 48/49 yd FG when your kicker had already shown during that game that he wasnt going to be automatic with longer FG's.

Garrett is very analytical. People like that tend to think like that make better choices when they have plenty of time to make them. I don’t think his though process is fast enough to make on the spot decisions. Probably why he ends up trusting in others to make them for him, ie timeout before kick. I think he tends to “go with the flow” or “stay with the game plan” instead of being confident in taking a risk that is outside the box. Great head coaches have excellent instincts during the game (Jimmy Johnson). I fear Garrett doesn’t.
