Orsborn: Fixing the flaws in Cowboys' draft

Fixing the flaws in Cowboys' draft
Published 10:38 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2011

The longer the NFL lockout continues, the less time the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff will have to tutor a draft class filled with question marks. Express-News Cowboys beat writer Tom Orsborn takes a look at some of the flaws connected to the eight rookies, a few of whom are expected to contribute immediately:

Tyron Smith
OT, first round: Scouts say his hand placement and "punch" strength need work. Offensive line coach Hudson Houck must also find out whether Smith can someday make transition from right side to left.

Bruce Carter
LB, second round: Rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee is his top priority, but Carter also needs plenty of classroom time to lay groundwork for move from OLB in 4-3 scheme to an inside spot in the 3-4.

DeMarco Murray
RB, third round: Lesson one from running backs coach Skip Peete would be simple: Don't run so upright.

David Arkin
OG, fourth round: Missouri State alum's mean streak is a plus, but he needs to get a lot quicker after dominating marginal competition in college.

Josh Thomas
CB, fifth round: Hands must improve after he dropped six interceptions in college.

Dwayne Harris
WR, sixth round: Scouts say his route running, technique and blocking need plenty of polishing.

Shaun Chapas
FB, seventh round: He'll have to become a much more explosive blocker before Jason Garrett compares him to former Cowboys teammate Daryl Johnston.

Bill Nagy
C, seventh round: Like Arkin, Nagy is tenacious. But he lacks bulk, strength and experience after only one season as a starter at Wisconsin.

I thought Tyron lacked a punch as well. He is so quick he would focus on mirroring in pass protection. Only sometimes he would get pushed back a little b/c he let a rusher get into his body

Very very correctable
